Are things any different elsewhere ?

Quote the headline of this article - "Kalanick and others managed to build such great companies, INSPITE of their apparent foibles...". I would say that they build such companies BECAUSE of their foibles.

Which successful company does not have something(s) shady about it ? Compromises on product/ service quality, cheating consumers, mis-treatment of its staff, murky financial deals, unfair trade practices etc. etc. - the list can go on and on.

Why pick on Apple or Uber ?

To err is human

Every human has a weakness and has to pay for it. One need not criticize, nor empathize with Jobs or Kalanick, nor get outraged at Bezos.

Jobs has suffered, Kalanick dropped from his own creation. They have paid their price for their foibles.

In Indian cases, we have an escape mechanism. People drop money into hundies, or fund political parties when their children drive over people on the road.
