Mr Writer.. America ,Japan and Germany Population, Crime Rate and Corruption is less then India so don't give this kind of examples. To print one note it cost 3.5Rs and if educated people start using cards and mobile app to pay, then government can save lot of money by printing less number of notes and it will also save transportation cost

What's the implication on general public if we choose digital way? In the first instance, there is no adequate infrastructure; then there is no data security (recently you may be aware data relating to accounts of lakhs of people was feared compromised and still there is no news on this as to what action has been taken). It was recently reported that more than 70% of the ATMs in India are running on outdated software (which is not being updated by Microsoft because they have already declared it as obsolete) but just to avoid expenses, the banks have not upgraded yet to new software; compromising security of data) ... under these circumstances and when authorities are careless and casual, how would people believe them and choose digital way. Besides that it is expensive.

How much intelligence is needed ??
by veera n on Jan 02, 2017 02:26 PM  | Hide replies

How much intelligence is needed to understand the usefulness of digital economy ? Why compare with developed world ??? our population is very high and achieving 40% digital transactions is good enough.Yes digital transactions are costly compared to cash, but we can put a name to each transaction..this is very useful for tax monitoring..How come there are lot of journalists opposing this ???.We need good infrastructure support for this to work..we should be asking Modi for the same..not writing useless junk with some useless number comparison.

Besides paying income tax and other taxes, why should one bear additional burden due to these transactions ? It is for providing these infrastructure that govt. is collecting taxes. Let these facilities be in place first. Why should one risk their data due to inadequate / poor infrastructure/security

it is not a easy subject to discuss
by Sandeep R Patil on Jan 02, 2017 02:08 PM

Going cashless is a good idea but it should be used after complete study of our economy sectionwise i.e
If all labour , employees payment is made through cashless it will be more beneficial as poor labour will be benifited .
Again it is not fullproof as i have heard a institute which has taken few lakhs in donation for a particular oppointment , it was done by giving loan to appointed person from financial institute of same institute which was withdrawn by the trustees...and the loan repaid through salary by appointed person .
SO IT IS NOT EASY GOING CASHLESS AS YOU SEE FROM ABOVE EXAMPLE THAT THE ENTIRE PROCESS WAS CASHLESS AND STILL CORRUPTION HAS OCCURED

Infrastructure and Culture - both have to reform
by Ramseshu on Jan 02, 2017 01:06 PM  | Hide replies

Not many will agree or even attempt to understand the spirit of this article. Surely, there will be bouquets or brick-bats for this author merely for the views, without going into merits of this article.

From weeding out black-money to stall future corruption and then on to digitalisation - we have been told many purposes for the DeMo. It has been a journey of twists and turns and our own value system will bring us back to the state we were in before Nov 08. We have precedence of 1978 DeMo to demonstrate what we are.

Unless the value system of each individual is voluntarily cleansed - not forcibly - and unless an infrastructure friendly to good values is in place, the corrupt will continue to thrive, and the simple ones will continue to suffer.

There will always people on both sides - for and against, for emotional reasons.

Lot of Bong economists. Most backward thinking people. Unnecessarily comparing with Indians with Americans and Europeans. It is a well known fact that Indians are inherently corrupt unlike the other countries. So no use of this comparison...

Most perfect answer, media is total against such move of digitization. Normally if govt tries to bring 100%, it will be only fruitful in 10% cases. Media like political parties never take any responsibility, but trying to instigating people against demonetisation.
