Mistry to blame ?
by Sudarshan Nityananda on Oct 25, 2016 07:28 AM

Regarding the steel acquisition in UK, it is actually Ratan Tata who must take the blame. He did not anticipate the sharp downturn that would take place in following years. In the case of DoCoMo, the Govt is not permitting the settlement that is due to the collaborator, so how is it Mistry's fault ? Again, the entire telecom foray is a dream of Ratan's and it bombed from the beginning. Big groups have a habit of dumping blame on the most convenient person and boosting the most popular person.

The name TATA is associated with trust in India. When we buy a TATA product, we buy with full confidence in its quality. Trust is a long term asset for any business. Taking business decisions which result in erosion of this long term asset, though profitable in short term, does not suit business empires (that strategy is only for single business organisations). So sacking of Mistry is a decision taken to vindicate TATA strategy - that they value their business associates and employees and are willing to standby them even at the cost of some short term profit.
I think their message is loud and clear now.

Use your common sense Mr Viswanathan, who said Cyrus Mistry is Malayalee ? One should understand from his name and surname that he is Parsee.

This is a stunning development !
by chanakya maurya on Oct 24, 2016 06:18 PM  | Hide replies

Indeed very stunning.

Very stunning because it took almost four years for a conglomerate like the Tata empire to realize they had chosen a wrong man ?

Or is is the case of a persistent intervention of Ratan even after having stepped down.

Corporates pass through thicks and thins.

But firing a man after almost four years hardly augers well particular for the tata emblem.

I would not agree. Cyrus Mistry had taken very hard business decisions of shutting down non profit making SBUs. CMC Ltd was merged into TCS & one of their divisions was shut down which meant nearly 1700 employees were made jobless in a span of 2 months. This I know bcoz a unfortunate friend of mine working as a manager in CMC had to bear the brunt. While taking hard business decisions the collateral damage that comes along is very negative word of mouth for the organisation in the market. Hardly anyone would want to join such a company where the future is so insecure, so I would say BoD acted in wisdom. Sometimes it pays to see the bigger picture & being shortsighted with a eye for immediate gains can lead to much bigger problems later on.

You are write. Now, Tata group is saved.
I would also like to share my experience like yours. I had booked a row-house in Tata Housing. I was offered the row house after a delay of about 3 years. The structure offered was in a dilapidated condition. The same was repaired and painted. I brought this to the notice of the MD of Tata Housing and then to the notice of Cyrus Mistry with the photographs of the repaired house. I sent reminders but none of them bothered to even acknowledge. Their Executive threatened me to accept the house offered or face forfeiture of amount paid and if I go to court, they will drag me upto Supreme Court. Today, my hard earned money is stuck.
