Very good work is done at Railway platforms and even small and unknown railway stations. Even trains are regularly cleaned while running. I have noticed this even in an unimportant train like Hazarduari Express second sitting coach. Kudos to the new railway ministers. There are several stories in social media that a tweet to official twitter handle of railways is resulting in fantastic work within mins at railway stations across the country. Indian Railways is definitely transforming itself!!!

Comparments normally used to be clean for quite a number of years. One thing if a train runs for more than 24 hours and more, then only the passengers feel the dirt and smell. It is because of civic sense of the passengers and it depends of as to how the coaches are being utilised by the passengers.
Apathy of govt. servants is failing all such pans, everywhere one can see dirt, malba, digs etc.,etc., close to road side. No one is there to take correction.

Swachh Bharat is inspired by Keep Singapore campaign ignited by their iconic Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew. But nobody knows they first initiated a campaign in 1959 with different name. They launched seven similar campaign and all of them have failed. It was only in 1967 they went out comprehensively with strict punishment for offenders. He said this campaign got momentum because during that time they started revamping their economy, radically eradicated poverty, started provision for housing for all, created massive jobs and went on record path of gdp growth and development. It was this whole social, economic and cultural changed led to some success in keep Singapore clean campaign and later in 70's, just like ganga rejuvenation they went for clean Singapore river drive which took 20 years to make it clean and it happened only when all the policies were in effect and after building the infrastructure like proper sewage line, recycling waste it got reflected. What Modi is thinking, people will get inspiration from this and they would do it voluntarily and make it success. It has to be followed with economic, social, cultural and political reform and again PM got it horribly wrong. India needs to get inspiration from China how they transformed their economy and specially the civil service which is inspired from meritocracy which led to massive economic growth

Well said. What Modi(or anybody who intents to) is fighting against is against a mindset and the acquired habits of the population in general. The task is massive: to install some amount of general civic sense which is missing totally from the minds of the urbanites ( and rural population). We are just into the habit of expecting the society to do everything for us. This attitude has to change. I have not seen any of the earlier government attempting such a massive reach out program to get the people thinking. Let it start somewhere...people will take it forward, albeit slowly.

Right from 60s, may be even earlier by British, govt has been doing various such things. Indian govt has eradicated chicken pox, polio and restricted cholera thro advertisement. Growth of population has been restricted. During 50-60s child mortality rate was high and now it has been restricted to less than a percent. Indians Life Expectancy Rate during Independence was 41 and now it is 68 as of 2011. It is the responsibility of every individual and the govt is to educate for awareness.
Instead of having mass campaign on TV and newspapers its better to have some officers on ground with help of the local state govt team which are part of the cleanliness of the city or town or the contractors who clean the city garbages. We need complete co-ordination with all the teams like identifying the place where the garbage collected need to be thrown or how it should be disposed, how to have garbage segregated, how the contractors need to use those segregated garbage wet and dry and further segregate the dry like paper, plastics, foams, tubes and glass, chemical items, the things collected can be put to use like in making paper cartons, plastics can be used for making roads, the wet can also be used to make a layer for making of roads or on basements when creating new greenspaces like parks, gardens etc
