by sreerama on Jul 01, 2016 09:45 PM

In India sexual harassment is prevalent right from schools, colleges, daily labour ,contractors, hospitals, employed under politicians, everywhere if women are vulnerable, especially in private establishments including sales girls.only in govt it is less because of strict conduct rules and hierarchy of Admn is there to take action even if lower officers fail to take action whereas risking your job one has to make complaint.only all women association become strong enough only they can protect each other from clutches of keechakas.jeediguntaGoa

There are major issues at NTT Data Bangalore in this aspect. Even HR and Managers won't act. For them work is more important then ethics and women protection.

In Indian Corporates ladies have a well defined Policy in place. They are well protected and they can use it against anyone whenever they feel threatened. Had it not been in place, Phaneesh Murthy wouldn't have been a pauper today. However, when males are harassed and Workplace Bullying happens against males there is no Policy in place. Even, the best of the best IT majors today have no Policy against Workplace Bullying or Workplace Mobbing. Under the Barb of "Better or Higher Performance" Executives and Sr.Management get away with Workplace Bullying and Mobbing. In spite of raising this issue several times, there is nothing done by the Govt. Now someday when something drastic happens with a big IT major only then the Govt. will proceed ahead in framing a law...Till then nothing happens in India...An event should happen only then our Politicians and Babus will wake up...

Reality is when it happens at lower levels, action is likely to be taken. When the senior members of management commit this, It is difficult because the POSH members are mostly employees and not so senior enough challenge. Second point that I had noticed when I constituted the committee with external members is the commercial mindset of most of these so called external members. Whichever NGO that i had interacted, there is no such thing as true commitment to this cause but how much they can extract from companies. I had seen these external members even threatening if their demands are not met. Therefore, fairness is still a long way to go in India.

You must understand that when its System vs the individual, its the System that always wins in India. The legal framework is pretty shoddy and pathetic in India and Corporates which have loads of money & time have the space to employ a strong legal counsel to protect their interests. For an individual who survives from a "pay cheque to pay cheque" it becomes a herculean task, this is one of the reason why many of them overlook and give up. Legal cases can go on for over a decade and which working individual has that kind of Bandwidth which the Corporates have. Above all, after filing a case against a Corporate you are bound to remain unemployed for several years. Its a known outcome. So who would dare ?. The Corporates know the game very well and its they who will win either ways, this is the reason they stoop to Harassment and intimidation at Workplaces. Period.
