Walled-up Net is not the Web
by David Jacob on Jan 17, 2016 09:35 PM

In art films of the 70s, every self-respecting village had a man with a hand-cranked movie projector - where one could see a small collection of moving images from distant lands. All the 10 year olds got suitably impressed, because this was a time without TV, or movie shows.

This is what I think of when I hear about Free Basics. Zuckerberg can call his little bioscope show whatever he wants ( Zuckerberg's Curated Site Picks, Web as seen in North Korea)

But he shouldn't expect everyone to join him in calling it magical charitable game-changing endowment for the poor.

India begging as always
by J Arora on Jan 10, 2016 09:36 PM

India collects billions of dollars in taxes and it never spends the taxes collected on the poor people but after taking a few crores from Bill gates and Mark Zuckerberg and likes of Azim Premji who spend for poor people. Entire taxes are spent to run government machinery only. My India is called great because of this only. I feel sad ruling India sitting at my table without getting anything in return except harassment from all type of taxes from where to pay these and till when.

If he wants to provide free internet...

... let him provide access to whole internet not for few sites which he wants to favor violating net neutrality. He can limit data not access.

Free Basic
by ajith prasad on Jan 05, 2016 11:02 PM

As has been pointed out by the IT stalwarts Free Basics is a well laid trap for net users. This opens the flood gate for the service providers to charge as they like in future for any other service they provide and make huge profit. Eventually we will end up like making paying toll at every km of the road that we travel; every link that we use will be charged according to the demand. Also hand over a handle to the main service provider to dictate terms on what one may accesses and when.
This move needs to be resisted at any cost
