Nearly 8 crore child
by piri on Aug 28, 2016 09:37 PM

labourers in India (though the govt says there are only about 1.2 crores).

And the BJP govt tinkers with the laws to create the impression that it is going to stop the practice. Instead of cracking the whip and enforcing the existing law with an iron hand and to book all offenders and also to close loopholes, if any, it has created one more loophole to allow exploiters to take big advantage of !

by raghavendra on Aug 27, 2016 11:13 AM

EVERY ONE SHOULD RESPECT THE LAW. BENEFIT GOES TO EVERY ONE. THINKING AT ONE ANGLE DOES NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM.

Child labor.

Government decision to allow children to work on their family farms or learning family’s traditional skills is correct. We should not overlook following ground reality:

a)      Large population is engaged in agriculture and many own small piece of land. Their crops depend on the rains and the price they get depends on middlemen. So apart from loss due to excess / insufficient rains, even when there is a bumper crop they have to resort to distress selling. In this situation, for these small farmers, it is not economically viable to employ labourers. Then naturally the whole family is compelled to work in their fields.
b)      Because of the poverty of farmers, there is seasonal migration to cities in search of jobs and many go to other linguistic states for part of the year. Since most of the states are promoting regional language schools, their children find it difficult to get even Hindi medium school in the vicinity.

c)      Regarding children of artisans learning their traditional skills at an early age, it is a fact that these can be better learned at an early age.
d)      With poor quality of education in government schools, it does not improve the employability. Hence poor parents feel it wise to engage their children in their own professions.

e)      Besides poor quality of education in government schools, poor level of learning is also due to malnourishment. Malnourishment in childhood causes irreversible damage to cognitive development and they are not able to cope up with acad
