Air India's turn around
by g chetty on Oct 14, 2015 03:34 PM

Air India has more than one ways of earning money. Firstly it is the scheduled flight itself. If Govt wants, Air India can be given the high earning routes, which I believe has been given to private players. The cost of operations has to be reduced to basic minimum, which is tough since, the jobs are secured, and non performing staff cannot be set home. Air India has a big engineering setup, still the private airlines need to go abroad for servicing, which I feel can be done at Air India. Overhaul of rotables can be done here, which need not be sent abroad by other private airlines, even Air India is sending rotables abroad, despite having the facility within. The staffing should be done (new) on contract basis, on required basis only.
Additionally the airlines is providing aircraft for govt. use, I hope they are billing the govt. also.

In fact there are so many ways to increase the efficiency of the flights being operated, here the company needs to improve the aircraft\'s OEE. With reducing fuel cost, the company needs to make the best of the opportunity.

I wish all the best to the airlines.

No Chance of Survival
by Keki Patel on Jul 13, 2015 01:45 PM

AI is being kept alive on oxygen time & again because it is an airline of the babus, for the babus & run by the babus. Period. Its their private fiefdom kept surviving on taxpayers money. Govt does not have the will or the guts to privatize it. Nobody wants to lose a freebie.

Citizens

Once a credible turnaround plan and privatization plan is announced, citizens should also do their part by booking their flights on Air India even if the fare is 200-300 rupees higher.

Firstly, we get hot cooked food for free while the same on private airlines costs 200 rupees for a sandwich and 50 rupees for a cold drink or tea/coffee. That itself makes up for the extra 200-300 rupee fare.

Secondly citizens may pay an extra 200-300 rupees for the fare but the entire fare amount of 4000-7000 rupees goes to Air India (i.e. Govt) coffers which can help in the turnaround and eventually saves 4000-7000 rupees of the taxpayers of this country.

I have started doing this myself. I book Air India as far as possible even if it is 200-300 rupees higher. If a couple of lakh frequent flyers adopt Air India as their preferred flight, it could quickly wipe out its losses.

Of course all this should be done ONLY if the govt shows strong measures to turnaround Air India and eventually privatize it so that citizens and taxpayers are not paying for their inefficiency in perpetuity.
