Only time will tell... I do not see any concrete example of what he has done that points out that he is cut out for the role given. Anyway, as they say time will tell
happy his surname is used.Happy for his achievements as an Indian, a telugu person and a man of diverse and purposeful hobbies. Keep it up, Sir. ram challapalli, rtd pathologist and ADME/Principal(AP) 08650233864,Dehradun
Gopi is a nice speaker and motivator. I think this particular ability of him and some decent amount of luck has taken him to places with a steady rise in GE from GRC lab manager to BU head and subsequently the center head. I am sure some of his contemporaries in JFWTC are highly envious of him, but he certainly has something, which is foreseen by others (the recruiters). For sure, its not him, who was making business of 250MM$ from India centre, he was just heading a team. Hope he manages to take Tata's new heights than just walking the talk and enjoying the perks. Good luck Gopi.

Someone told me that he is the grandson of the famous Telugu writer Gopichand of yester years. Is it true?

No idea, I dont think he boasts of a family clown to his advantage even if he had one. He used to be very approachable in his haydays, hope he is still accessible to common employees in Tatas!!
