Only MANAGE

I as a Manager (RETD.in PSU) had seen that some Managers worked as guides, mentors and role models sharing the hardwork along with their staff and thus got respect from their staff.(I am one of them who got a high job satisfaction along with respect acting as one of the big brothers to the Staff and I continue to get the same respect and regard even when I visit the ex-workplace). I also had seen some Managers who were called .KAAM CHORs since they depended solely on the deliverance and skills of the staff, pestering them, threatening them with ratings, intimidating them and lastly becoming parasites depending upon the Staff besides becoming parasites to the Company where they were working. It was also because of the Managers' lack of skills, job knowledge, and ego of their ranks and pay that lastly made to be looked down upon by the staff working with them, even getting called behind their backs as KAAM CHOR BOSS, NAALAYAK BOSS etc.etc.by the Staff. This is prevalent in Govt. and Public sectors where most Managers in Engg., Managers in Accounts, Administration, Head of the Depts. of these wings as well as most GENERAL MANAGERs behave odd like this sheerly by their vanity/arrogance of RANKS & PAY ignoring the fact that those are all temporary till retirement besides falling low in the eyes of their colleagues/staff, getting forgotten by the staff once retired who even heave a sigh of relief once such Arrogant Chiefs & GMs go. That is why Govt/PSU are called WHITE E

Mr. Rajagopal,

Interesting to see how you perceive the role of manager. This confirms that the lament of Mr. Balakrishnan is justified!

Sloan is one of the greatest manager of industrial era. His contribution includes the idea of divisonalization, market segmentation, dealership development. He also gave prominence to ethical decision making, and practiced it. As a manager he was not supervising a defined job, he was creating value. The value creation he did established not just General Motor but created a whole industry. The impact was of no less significance than that of Henry Ford, who is considered as an entrepreneur, not manager.

Drucker, to whom Mr. Balakrishnan has referred to, is considered father of modern management. He learnt the art and science of management and particularly about policy based deicision making by studying Sloan run General Motors.

Designation is not what makes a manager! Think I need to learn from your example and at least retire from posting in Rediff columns.

A Manager is more of a Hard Taskmaster.

He can formulate his own Personal rules and term them as Company Policies with Management approval.

A Manager can expect Machine like precision from his workers and he can give them a Very High target and a Very Low salary (He will become Company's Favourite if he does so).

A Manager can fire or hire as per his own discretion and give Salary hikes only for those whom he likes or gets other favours from them.

Since Managers have no skills of their own - they live-off other people's work :)

Good Observation
