Differential pricing (i.e. subsidized diesel) has been the main factor in people opting for Diesel car despite the higher acquisition cost. In the international market petrol and diesel prices do not vary much and in some counties Diesel is more expensive than petrol. Govt. has following option;
1) Encourage customer to buy Petrol vehicle by offering incentive to the buyers.
2) Totally Ban diesel vehicles for personal use segment (private car)
3) Reduce the petrol and diesel price difference by decreasing the petrol prices only and freezing theDiesel prices as we have not seen any benefits being passed on to the customers by the Transport segment in lieu of reduced Diesel prices.
I would never buy a diesel hatchback or sedan. The petrol engines are so much smoother. However, the high torque of diesel engines is suitable for SUVs and MUVs where the noise factor and vibration is compensated by toughness and ruggedness.
Diesel cars are the biggest danger to the environment. In my opinion govt should ban diesel car in phase manner like initially passenger car and later big lorry etc, It should be used for the power production. In western country like USA, UK only petrol or gas car are available. To reduce the pollution in India it will be first step to ban the manufacture of diesel cars.
