TATA THE TRUCK MAKER
by Chitranjan Sawant on Oct 11, 2014 10:28 PM

AUM. The general perception among car buyers in India is that TATA manufactures trucks well but Not cars.
TATAS must watch the market trend for some more time before entering the car race,

Service Sucks, new launches take forever

I've been using a TML Indigo XL Classic Petrol 101 PS for the past 7 years. On paper that's impressive, in real life it's a pain. The car is superbly designed, it's features like turning indicator repeaters on ORVMS, rear AC etc. are NOW becoming standard on cars like Honda City. It's leg room till today is exceeded only by the likes of Honda Accord and Skoda Superb, hence I am unable to replace this car economically.

However, the after sales service just sucks.
1) I found in many Tata Authorized Service Centers, that their people are just not sufficiently trained to work on the 16V Twin Cam engine
2) Technical people are not motivated enough to do a thorough Root Cause Analysis, the moment they find one problem, the solve it and close the job card. The engine of my car was 'jerking' sometime back. One spark plug was found faulty, replaced and car returned to me within one day. After a week the jerking returned. Car was again sent to workshop. This time I took LEAVE to personally attend (I'm an auto enthusiast & Mech. Engg.) After eliminating all mechanical possibilities including cleaning fuel filter, we checked the spark plug cables. The cables were faulty. CAN ANYONE IMAGINE CHANGING THE SPARK PLUG AND NOT CHECKING THE CABLE?
3) Service center people have no idea whatsoever of ride comfort and NVH of a luxury sedan. Their datum is the crappy Indica taxi. Any NVH below Indica is acceptable in ALL cars!!!

New products"
1) TML in their wisdom discontinued the superb Indigo XL product and brought in the 'Cheap in everyway' Manza. Firstly the Manza looks like someone's attempt at making a sheet metal amphibian boat car, it is rare to find such an unappealing product. In sharp contrast, till today my 7 year old, dented and scratched at many places Indigo XL draws looks of admiration and positive comments on it's sleek design and executive class Sedan proportions (unlikely to appeal to people whose idea of a car is the Honda Jazz or i20).

So WHAT DID TML do with the Indigo XL?
What they do best, released a TAXI version, by stripping away some of the additional features!
The Tata Motors Brand inspires, DISLOYALTY!

They are just a perfect replacement for the Premier Padmini, the rattling taxi makers.

I've never owned a Tata Safari, but travelled in one briefly at Kolkata. I found the ride comfort to be on par with high end Japanese SUVs!

What is wrong with the Tata Safari? The same thing that has always been wrong, it has an underpowered engine for the size and class of the vehicle. Not to mention, it also get's serviced by the same mortals whose datum of NVH is an Indica taxi. So what does TML do about the underpowered Safari? Why introduce a powerful Aria of-course!

From outside, it feels like TML is not an Automobile Company, which is by definition a place for passionate people, but rather like a Municipal Department, like say Roads and Bridges or Public Works etc., where a bunch of qualified people are following all processes and on paper everything should be perfect and in reality everything is at the level of the average Indian Municipal Corporation.

Well we should be thankful to the company which has designed manufactured its cars which can be said truly made in India and indigenous. Well there are critics no matter what good you do to the country, truly Tatas have gone to high from Zero in Car making and are competitive in the word.

Every new product has its week point and need to be solved with proper feedback which TATAS have successfully done. Even companies like Toyota, Suziki etc have to call back its vehicles some time due to some snaps in design etc.

The areas they need to improve is Service which many of the old time Depots feel they are dealing with Truck Drivers or Transporters.

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.
BTW, made in your country is no excuse to buy rubbish, else Indian software firms would have no business outside India.

Difficult road ahead

where are the zest and bolts? No where in sight. Thanks to the many avatars of Indica, customers stopped revering it, lost faith in Tata passenger cars, and afraid of taking further risks. Now only few strategies can save them if they want to remain in the market. flawless, emerging popular robust vehicle, European styling away from the existing category. Of course change at the driver seat wont help its the mindset, that will do.

Once the pioneer of Indian roads is now the talking point of their failures. Maruthi Suzuki too has had its share of failures.
Two wheelers are a good try to make some fast buck. Nano Indigo or Indica all have a common problem. maintenance.
With the CEO not knowing which to handle when or the new Cyris is totally out of the news flipkart snapdeal go kart on the raise Tata motors have decided to kneed in deep waters rather than take the roller skater. its unfortunate that they are not able to see the change
