FB may have paid too much for it. Given that when you pay that much, there has to be a way to make money off it. When ads start appearing, people will move away to the next big thing. That still leaves the founders with a ton load of money.

Wrong. Deal valuations are based on dozens of factors - the most important being traffic / foot fall.

WhatsApp is among the largest countries in the world - $19 billion is a bargain.

People don't move on to the next big thing, if the thing they're on right now is BIG.

Examples:

Google - still at the top of the search engine game. Whatever happened to the next big thing - Bing? Yahoo?

Facebook - dozens of social media networks sprung up, in all shapes and sizes. FB cannot be dislodged.

Youtube - metacafe, vimeo, Dailymotion - none of them reached Youtube's status. People will not move away in hordes to the other video sharing platforms.

The common denominator here is Value. Traffic follows Value.

WhatsApp's value proposition is far too effective to ignore.

As for making money, if you were the ruler of a large country, couldn't you come with at least 10 ways to make money?

This is just amazing. Reaching every corner of the world without employing a single marketing person is just incredible. I was surprised when a tailor working in a small town was using WhatsApp. He mentioned that he doesn't like Gmail, but likes WhatsApp. That itself is a big tribute to this app. BTW, I have to confess that I haven't used it much :-)
