in no circumstances should the govt waste public money by bailing out these loss making organisations, they should either privatise it or close it down.Spending good public money only encourages them to become more inefficient.

One remembers...

One remembers the late 70's when the Maharaja thrilled passengers by regaling them with their imperious style and impeccable service. It was ranked as high as fifth in terms of service, of all world airlines.
On top of nationalizing the august corporate, they completely revamped the style and replaced the regal Maharaja with a pathetic new logo. They changed the decor with fabric and wall papers that stood at odds with all that Air-India stood for. Then started the steady decline with the Politicians nibbling at what was left... It surprises one that it lasted as long as it did, albeit at the cost of the tax-payer....

Who Killed AI
by Bharat on Oct 14, 2013 10:43 AM  | Hide replies

The article does not pin point any one / a group of people / organization - that can be held responsible for bringing AI to the level that we see today.

To the best of my knowledge, we can attribute this freefall of AI to the following:
1. Huge Political pressure - to give freebies to politicians.
2. Corrupt Management
3. Un-willing employees

It is no secret that there were incidents where Praful Patel would order AI to cancel flights between two cities, just because his daughter wanted an aircraft to go to a particular place. (An incident of AI flying from Chandigarh to Delhi was cancelled during IPL days..)

I travel Business class quite ofter to London from Delhi. A BusinessClass in AI Boeing 777 ER has 21 seats and I will normally find 5 to 6 airhostesses serving us - during the entire duration of the flight. What a waste - most of the time these gentlemen/women will be idling around. I also travel Lufthansa BusinessClass - which operates a 747 with 28 seats in this configuration and I would never find more than 3 serving members of the airlines. AI staff - does not want to change and keep a hefty staff bill.

Options - Keep AI off the politicians.
Make them more accountable. Let every paisa being spent - someone is answerable for this.
Decrease the flying staff of AI. Let them do ground duties.
Last - search for more profitable routes for AI. Delhi / Mumbai to Australia / SouthAfrica / US / UK / Singapore / Hongkong.

One major blow was to purchase obscene no of aircrafts which AI could not afford & make use of. This was done under Praful Patel as minister (of NCP, a close aid of SHARAD PAWAR, the most corrupt politician of the country)& then Chairman of AI one Mr Jadhav (I think) once again a person by Sharad Pawar (of same caste & state). Remeber, he was abruptly removed from the post a couple of years later. Praful patel aslo resigned from the post. These are some of the culp[rits.

Couple of years back itself a report said that the Air India has 300% over employees, ie 3 persons do a single persons job. They are getting salary from the tax payer's money. Why a government should run a airline in the first place when their all other mode of public transport is in pathetic condition

AIR INDIA
by ramasamy magendhran on Oct 14, 2013 10:34 AM

Air India and erstwhile Indian Airlines are both good PSUs. Our politicians and bureaucrats intentionally, deliberately to help private airlines forced to commit suicide of the both airlines it is like how they killed state road transport corporations. the difference is bus corporations pling on road and airlines flying on the sky, but both face same fate.
