The priorities of the Govt.seems to be misplace.Electrical cars would definitately been benefited had the Govt considered some relief for the non petroleum car manufacturers, this would have boosted the exports and lowered the fuel emmissions.
Govt.should give freedom to IITians to explore the possiblity of inventing two wheelers, four wheelers running on solar energy so we will save lot of money on crude oil import and our economy will also improve fanatastically.
These should vehicles should be cost competative so general public can purchase them. Thus IITians can serve the society & nation instead of becoming slave of Finance sector MNCs.

Your observations are all Misplaced Mr Bansal . Technology isn't something that is a bastion of IItian's .
After having worked with some of them over the last few years I find nothing exceptional in them as compared to their peers who dont have a seal of this institution .
Therefore setting IITs as Benchmark might not be appropriate .These Institutions have contributed very little or let me term it as abysmally to the Indigenous Technology Growth in this country. These Institutions have not done justice to the elite status associated with it.
However Government may handpick a handpick a pool of Young engineers from its Engineering Services Cadre and pay them exceptionally good packages in addition to their salaries to work on such clean energy projects and be very careful that the project is headed by a Technocrat instead of a Bureaucrat with direct reporting and Monitoring by PMO .
" The initial cost of acquisition will definitely be high but it will be nullified in running cost. The running cost of an EV is 50-60 paisa per kilometre as against 3-4 per kilometre on diesel and 5-6 per kilometre on petrol." I did not know 50 paisa per km is cheaper than 3-4 or 5-6 per km.
Why none of you are talking about the environ friendly vehicle, which will have zero pollution?! Metro\'s like Mumbai will be horrible to live in next decade, with the influx of vehicles? Pollution is the gift of progress which will damage our future, it is thus essential that we force the Government to encourage & support more such vehicles; unless they are part of International Oil Mafia?!!!

It will reduce city-pollution, but we can not say that electric vehicles are zero-polution. because, to charge them we need electricity most of which comes from either coal/gas power plants, we are pushing pollution from cities to remote places & most importantly, the we don't have proper used-battery disposal scheme. batteries use highly toxic materials.
When India is reeling under acute power shortage and every day load shedding (power outage) is a common thing, the infrastructure for charging of these EVs will pose a serious threat for its success. It is a temporary transport arrangement vis-à-vis alternate like diesel and petrol vehicles. The time it takes to charge the battery is very large and no one can wait this long for charging. The charging must be instant (like the experience at petrol/diesel fuelling station), which is possible but its infrastructure cost is very high and will load the existing power infrastructure. There are other challenges like reliability of battery, maintenance support structure of Mahindra, in Indian environmental condition (with dust, moisture etc.), etc. This can only be seems viable when electricity used for this purpose is generated using renewable energy sources like wind, solar etc. which is very uncertain and difficult to predict.

this car was the brain child of Maini Group of Bangalore. They availed all tax benefits (duty free) for import of batteries and components from Yugoslavia and also concession in ED and local tax and brought out the so called EV which did not inspire people to opt for it as majority of their cars had one problem or the other, main being Battery. The body of the car was of fibre and the inner space was fit only for children. As Maini, could not deliver the cars to international standards and even had a dull local market, he wisely sold it to Mahindra who is another Vijay Malya. Who are they fooling with the price match with SUVs when the battery and other major components are imported free of duty? They even get CE and Local Tax concession and the car should cost cheaper and affordable by middle class people. But car manufacturers seldom think about middle class. Only two and three wheeler manufacturers think of this class and they also price their product atleast 75% to the cost of car, though, it should not cost not more than 40% to the existing cost as they too get duty exemption and tax concessions.
