media should give publicity to any city -improvement initiatives. in western countries, any city improvement initiatives are given huge publicity in news websites.they will be even leading news article (while in india, undue publicity is given to every single act of politicians) so my tip is to stop giving publicity to politicians and start giving importance to city-improvement
in this regard India has MILES and MILES to go. a clean and beautiful india would be awesome and people will respect india automatically.
when you look at college campuses and city shopping malls (both shown on rediff this month),you can see India can make VERY GOOD MAN-MADE ENVIRONMENTS!! the need is to extend these excellent environments to entire metros and cities and finally to whole nation. there is NO DOUBT that we have ability to do it...only doubt is how long before we can find political leaders who will assist (assist the already existing capable planners and architects)
The cost of living has gone up 5-8 times since early 2000s with absolutely no improvement in infrastructure. No clean water, no safe roads - all over flowing throughout monsoons, exploded traffic and congestion, no clean air but the cost of living has gone up multifolded. All 'cos of the greed of the builders and politicians. And we have the guts to compare with NYC and likes.

its not greed really..its mainly the HOPELESS ability of politicians and govt officials in urban planning.
Delhi is supposed to be the premier city of this backward land...instead it's become one huge slum, all thanks to the politically motivated policies of both the Delhi and federal govts, which has steadfastly and deliberately refused to build any housing or even create any comprehensive housing policies. This leaves the way clear for the politically-connected mafias to mint huge profits from control of these lands, which incidentally, are all owned by the Delhi govt. Useless, Shameless and Incompetent...that's the only way one can charcaterize the venal netas who have charge of this land.
Indian government does not like Mumbai making huge progress. They see Mumbai is cash-cow and would like to exploit it without giving much back. Lets take example of Local trains. There has been demand from Mumbai Municipal corporation to take control of Local trains and its infrastructure inline with cities like London; however Indian railway receives significant revenue from it so they don't want control going elsewhere. Indian railway does not invest into Local trains so most of them are outdated and cannot cope up with population. It is hampering growth of city.
At least cities which have population of mroe than 1 crore must be delinked to main State, as this become cosmo politan city with different culture, different type of civic problems of roads, drainage, drinking water, electricity etc.,etc., Such cities are having flat system of living, schooling and other amenities which does not match with main State.

Not so easy my friend! The rest of the state requires the city for revenues and they will never give it up, how much ever migrants as of today want to delink it and connect with Centre.
