Confused thinking by the author...
by concerned citizen on Sep 30, 2012 11:54 AM  | Hide replies

The author has tied himself in knots moving from one subject to the other.

It is ridiculous to state that the reason why India signed the WTO agreement or approved FDI in retail is because the bureaucrats are happy to get a foreign tour or posting.

I can understand the communists speaking in this language. At least they are true to their ideology. But other parties, specially the BJP and other regional parties !

Either they have a vested interest or they are playing the politics of opposition.

Take the BJP. It is well known that they are a party who have traditionally been supported by traders(banias as they are called). The BJP has not only been supported but also funded by these banias. It is now payback time. Hence they are opposing FDI in retail.

My argument is: "...even if the small retailers are hurt, is it the responsibility of the government to protect them by ignoring the larger interests of the people... ?"

The small retailers exist to serve society and not the other way around. Blaming Walmart is ridiculous. If the government frames rules for FDI in retail correctly, nobody can play around.

The political parties should demand correct rules for FDI in retail, not oppose them.

Save Nature......

In 1992, the first earth summit held at Rio D Jenaro, Brazil to discuss the environmental problems plaguing the Earth... But 20 years from that, earth has been reduced for a more catastrophic results.....
In India, the root cause is Corruption and a blatant disregard for environment... Western Ghats flora and fauna are actively destroyed.... The region near Mumbai are concertized at FULL THROTTLE.......... One interesting thing I will to tell......

The fate of Mithi River we all know....
some years down today....
The FATE of GADEHSWAR RIVER in New Panvel will be same as of Mithi... (The place was so scenic some 6 years back that people used to go for picnic... but after some years.. it will be like a Mithi.......... All Greenery in New Panvel area is concertized....

The hills etc are rapidly flattened to give rise to very high rising towers......

Due to bad governance and unaccountability on welcoming housing projects, greenery along western ghats are vanishing around outskirts of mumbai.Western ghats are on the verge of destruction due so called "Vacation Homes". Mangroves are chopped of and land is reclaimed to fit (vote bank etc.). Nobody know what will be the fate of our nation due to these kind of Administration.

Save NATURE so that the future generations will see the Nature's beauty from their own eyes rather than on Facebook, Photo prints etc.

FDI in Retail

If Government wants organized retail, value based supply chain why dont they dismantle some non performing PSU & create large Hypermart based organisations themselves. If they cant then they should leave the parliament and call for Foreign participation there as well to bring value

Big cities don't allow Walmart for the fear of hurting neighbourhood stores. Our retail stores have more power than them? UPA is out to loot or sell India.

Why FDI?
by aloke sarkar on Sep 26, 2012 09:23 AM

Computerization is required to going up with technical advancements.
Open economy is required to develop and coexist with world economy.
Why is FDI required for? Do we have a very underdeveloped retail market to serve us or something else?

What this country needs is encouragement and funding for Research and Education, to enable our bright Scientists to make us a leader in Technology. It is not cosmetics like FDI that we need. One is not saying that there will not be a temporary 'feel good' effect from FDI retail.
I hope people would focus on the real issues and not get distracted by political affiliations.

FDI's positivies
by Siddhartha Sanghi on Sep 26, 2012 03:23 AM  | Hide replies

It seems that the author has completely dis-regarded the positives of FDI in India. Can we even imagine how many unemployed people would earn their living because of Wal-Mart and other big chains? We produce the highest number of graduates in the world but our industry doesn't have the capability to hire them all. Through FDI, at least that unemployed MBA or that unemployed Civil Engineer will get quality well-paid employment.

My friend, I am sure you are yet to get a grasp of the real India. Now let me give a brief explanation how 50 people will lose the jobs.
1) It would be easy for Walmart to procure from one large farmer instead of marginal farming community, a bill on private companies farming will be out soon. Companies in collusion with government will buy large tracts of land at low price depriving farmers of their land.
2) As food products are in great demand in western nations, these companies may open a pseudo export companies and export food grains to western countries at the cost of domestic high inflation.
3) Most of the finished products will be imported from outside, depriving the cottage, small industries of their market in India.
4) There are theories called "loss leaders" and "Predatory techniques" in which they undersell the product for certain time until the local competition is eroded.
5) With the high inflation, loss of agricultural land and loss of business Purchase power of people shrinks greatly hence, reducing demands. Without demands no small scale organization survives. Hence, more and more people lose jobs in the cycle of events bringing down the overall growth of India.
6) Those hired by companies will be "under-Employed". For a farm labour, glitz of supermarket may be good but not the salaries. With the low wages, these employments will not add anything to Indian economy as it will just be hand to mouth survival basis.

The writer M R Venkatesh seems like a like crying over spilled milk. For that matter what has gone as an disadvantage to india after signing WTO agreement in 1994? It has indeed ended well after opening up of FDI. What the fuss then over FDI in retail. Some people really dont want to let India stopped being called a country of hungry people. Please change your mentality and let india move ahead

As long as Congress remains in power, India is jinxed to remain poor. No body can change it.
No body in power or Congress supporters are able to tell, how through retail FDI India, it's farmers and consumers will benefit.
