Key pad is actually a cover; so you can fold it at the back like a books cover page; its an additional facility really useful during chatting..

Hope its a HIT

I have seen so many ppl criticize MS just for the sake of it.
I have always been satisfied with MS products.
Sure, they didnt get into hardware like Apple, but 20 yrs ago, who could have seen that hardware would be the place to be ??
MS has done a lot for the businesses/consumers, with their windows OS.
I hope they become as successful in Hardware too.
IT is an everchanging field, and MS will adapt to it.
Also, sooner or later, Apple/Google/Facebook will be extinct --- Big cos tend to selfdestruct esp in this field.

Good but ...

On the surface of it, Surface seems to be suffering from identity crisis. It's a good attempt by MS to satisfy all types of customers. However, the basic point is that the price goes up by trying to "satisfy" all user segments. People who prefer touch wouldn't like to have the so-called keyboard if that is driving the price upwards. Serious developers and programmers would instead opt for a high end laptop, which would be cheaper than this device.

With Apple releasing version after version ipad and now MS releasing its own tablet, Also there are plethora of driod tablets. What will end users buy and what to expect. Also price range is a big factor. End of the day users are confused with all these h/w.

Strategically Innovative !!!
by Raja Srinivasan on Jun 19, 2012 02:19 PM

Microsoft which in the past had left the hardware part to HP & Dell has attempted a full synergy/marriage between hardware and software with SURFACE to compete effectively with APPLE which has been dominant and popular with business customers.

SURFACE with some of its characteristic features will strive to be business-friendly - and that is the strategy.

It will, however, initially will be sold in the company's retail stores for $1000. Time will spell its success or otherwise.

Nokia and MS?
by Prashanth DSouza on Jun 19, 2012 02:18 PM  | Hide replies

With the decision of Nokia to get into smartphones with microsoft windows, many expected them to go ahead and make a tablet finally. Seems like Nokia has been left out of this.

this is a very restricted launch limited to be sold directly via Microsoft retail only which primarily means US only.

Nokia remains its partner for worldwide sales and there should be announcement of a Nokia windows 8 tablet soon.

There is some promise but nothing great
by Mephistophilus on Jun 19, 2012 02:06 PM  | Hide replies

I dont see anything special being offered in a surface pro to trump even a transformer let alone the ipad.
Their strategy makes sense, but it remains to be seen how the surface pro, when it releases in 2013, will compete with latest droid based tabs the new ipad, where the latter have 3 years of community development and world wide user acceptance in its wake.

A simple question if you are a hacker or virus developer?
For what would you like to develop your destructive program on system which are used just 20% or on systems which are used 80%?

Attempts and efforts to break Windows are more than any other so that more systems can be crashed as even after such criticism the truth is 85% of desktop clients are still using windows.
