This article should be translated in all languages and should be read by grass hoppers and the politicians both. In this country we as a society and politicians have pampered poor and farmers so much (for vote banks), that they will never become stronger. Because farmers and poor people want interest free or low interest agriculture loans, they don't have to pay income tax, their diesel, fertilizers, farm equipment, electricity, seeds for sowing, medicines and pest controls for plants are subsidized. They want minimum support prices(MSP) for their crops higher every year from government. They are doing illegal construction in their lands in their villages which is even worst them cities. They have money to smoke bidis, eat tobacco, paan and gutkhas but don't want to pay more money for their children's education. This people in villages don't even want to pay Rs.250 as annual house tax to their panchayats. And in the end all this subsidies and tax burden comes on the person who pays business tax and income tax only to see more doles being given out. Absolutely ridiculous.
The writer is an absolute idiot. The grasshoppen in the story is starving because HE enjoys in the summer, HE doesn't save enough food while the ant does all these.
The poor in our country are not poor because THEY don't save. It's because they are not paid enough for their hard work. They are paid less so that the people who are paying can keep a larger share for themselves and be rich. This is the same story everywhere but there should be a bare minimum wage.
Just because a factory owner can be rich, he pays peanuts to his workers who remain poor. But if he pays enough to his workers so that they can have a middle-class lifestyle, then he wouldn't be rich initially. But those middle-class workers will spend more and thus generate new demands and kick start the economy. Thus eventually factory owner would have more demand and would expand and eventually be rich with his workers being middle class.
But this initial transistion HAS to take place id India wants to develop. The model where the owner is rich and the wokers are poor will not grow much. The worker should be paid enough to afford good housing, education for his kids, and nutritous food and leisure.

This is well explained if you read the whole passage.. its people like you who support the so called grasshoppers for more money!! why cant they earn it? why blame it on capitalism? I mean seriously? why not leave a low paying job and join a better one!! seriously dude!! get a life!

so in country of grasshoppers, eating all the grass, where there is a drought, where military is entirely unprepared, where medical and education facilities are lacking, where food grain needlessly rot, We see why we are a grasshopper country.
