See the Idiot does not understand like our government is a grasshopper enjoying the loot. We are suffering because we lack the basic, education, clean water, lack of irrigation schemes, electricity, complete mismanagement by an government who only loots.

so in country of grasshoppers, eating all the grass, where there is a drought, where military is entirely unprepared, where medical and education facilities are lacking, where food grain needlessly rot, We see why we are a grasshopper country.
Many people requiring help are in the grasshopper's position for reasons they had no control over, like expensive health problems in the family, or things like just plain bad luck.
All you people who see yourselves as the Ant may be in the position of the grasshopper next year.
Ihave never wished harm on people, but i hope the author of this article may see how he went wrong in his lifetime.
I have no problem with my taxes being used for helping people. I say this after paying them just hours ago.
The US is not anybody's role model any more - canada and the welfare states of Western europe outscore it an a lot of indexes-
The poor are looked after in any administration - as long as it is one man one vote.

Pl read these lines carefully: "The story ends, as India sees more indicipline, lower production, higher subsidies, poor growth, plummeting rupee and soaring inflation - finally leading to its economic collapse."The article is not about people deservingly requiring help. It is about financial and spending discipline. Another important sentence in the article. "And the beneficiary of a bloated government has been the quintessential grasshopper, so much so, entire nations are now turning into grasshoppers - with little or no faith in work or discipline." Please understand the article in the proper perspective. It is not only you pay taxes. I too pay. It is not philanthropy you pay tax. You are bound to. But graSSHOPPERS ARE NOT TO BE ENCOURAGED AS MODERN ECONOMIC MANAGERS DO.
Very well-written article. The only point of concern, though, is the fact that the author has conveniently forgot to mention that while the ant of the Aesop's story was really a hard-working creature, most of the so-called industrious rich people of the modern society have grown rich by adopting dishonest means. So, in the modern world, it is quite logical to rob the rich to feed the poor. However, a professional Chartered Accountant is unlikely to understand this issue!

You nailed it. Absolutely correct. The rich of today are not the hardworking Ants, and the MOST of the poors are not like that Grasshopper. Its the other way round these days. Hard working ant gets to starve, and the cunning grasshopper walks away with the loot. Would you call companies like wallmart "hard Working ants"

These are not the only two. Amounts doled out to certain states for Votes in the presidential election too among many more things.
The article though interesting and in part apt, does not really paint the true Indian situation. In India, it is the ant class (millions of its workers, farmers and ordinary lower level employees) which works hard and never gets to enjoy their fruits of labour and hard work. High on lop-sided policies which favour arm-chair wealth manipulators in connivance with corrupt politicians and bureaucrats, a select class has all the money and luxuries that comes with the package, while the majority continues to toil. The so called subsidiary and wealth re-distribution schemes in the country, somehow ends up favouring the rich and mighty more than the intended people. The writer, though well intended, appears to have totally misread the Indian situation and ended producing a non-sequitur.

The article is Good and it is only asking for discipline in part of the government. Rather than spending on subsidies, the government can spend the same on quality of electric supply(this will help the farmers), improve roads and railways(this will help the farmers to send the decaying products soon to the market, give access to millions of children to education), improve educational facilities, provide cheap medical insurance to cover the entire country, improve the legal system by creating more courts(this is a very important part of government).
Let me just tell you one thing...even the so called poor will not be happy working in that so called MNREGA scheme. They would always want to be self reliant and earn money. A good government is the one which governs less(and concentrate on the fundamental aspects of a nation like infrastructure, law and order, public health and education).
The article is spot on about what if wants to convey

rightly hit the nail on the head of the writer. A farmer who physically work for whole day and there is other part a fat who enjoy a 500 crore building called some.

the farmer 300 km from mumbai committed suicide and called by media some subsidy eater , but if we tear his stomach may be get pesticide instead of subsidy, but few rich people who enjoy pizza from the same farmers product will give lecture on subsidy , ant grassopher etc. this is the story of workers and manipulator
Thanks for putting it across so simply but convincingly...I wish someone sensible in the Government decision making body understand this truely and fully and then moves over and above vote-bank politics to fix this for the long term
I would beg to differ, M R Venkatesh implies that in India it is the lazy spendthrift person who is left without food in winter, while the hardworking person who saves money is warm and has all the food he needs. In reality, the lazy rich person enjoys himself in summer and winter, The hardworking rich person also enjoys himself in both the summer and winter, the hardworking poor labourer has no food in winter but survives in the summer, the hardworking middle-class just manages to feed itself in summer and winter, and God alone can help the lazy poor person, so my suggestion to Venkatesh is not to oversimplify a complicated issue into just hardworking and lazy people. We first need to ensure the hardworking people can make good money and enjoy themselves both in summer and winter, also we need to ensure that there are enough jobs for all the hard working people to do.
