In the Golden Gate suspension bridge (suspended span 1600m)the curvature of the earth was to be taken into account to maintain the verticality of the piers. The centre to centre distance of the piers was 1600m at the base, while at the top it was 15mm (0.6 inch) more.

Similar question arises in a sky scraper, if a theodolite is used to check verticality from bottom to top. However I think that if a plumb bob is used in construction from floor to floor (from the bottom), the plumb bob will automatically do the correction as it will be throughout attracted to the centre of gravity of the earth. However, plumb bob is a crude device for checking plumbness of a sky scraper. DISCUSSIONS FROM LEARNED ENGINEERS, SCIENTISTS, PHYSICISTS, ASTRONOMICAL SURVEYORS, ETC ARE OPEN.

Vidyasagar Sethu is a cable stayed bridge, not a cable suspended bridge.

Dear Palanki Narayana, Can you explain what is the difference between cable stayed and cable suspended bridge. Thanks, Regards.
i do not see the name of laxman jhoola one of the most scenic suspension bridges. not a single indian bridge & there are more than 6-7 chinese ones. our media & corporate world projects india just behind usa, europe & japan, but everywhere i find india being relegated to the bottom. in one after one category it is proved india is way behind our arch rival china, very painful to bear.

It should not be surprising at all. In china nobody goes against government decision and no never ending litigation on flimsy grounds. Here name one project , how important it may be for the region or nation , without it's share of litigation in courts. So in a way our system is full of loop holes and people with vested interests ranging from politicians to businessmen resort to litigation hampering the progress often for decades.Nothing can be done. Popular feeling is corruption in govt. is the cause for it but it is not entirely correct.Mostly the business interests are the cause of problems.
Other countries like China have them in the last 10-20 years. Shows how far ahead US and the west is in terms of infrastructure. India, the master of copying is taking only the worst from the west and leaving out the better things they have to offer to the world.

A nation is as good as its citizens. We also use to copy the worst from west but ignore what ever good they have.

We have the other bridge in SFO, the Bay Bridge which doesn't figure in this list though Golden Bridge is listed. In fact they say the famous Cisco Systems' logo is this Bay Bridge.
Interesting article , but I wish they had some sort of order while showing the bridges - either ascending or descending in terms of length . This seems too scattered . Interestingly , did anyone notice that at least 3 of the bridges from China had the same design ? I mean ,in terms of the tower's design . Maybe standardisation is a means of improving efficiency while building infrastructure .
