Petrol from plastic- what's new about it?
by Prashant Dhodapkar on Nov 18, 2011 09:25 AM  | Hide replies

Plastic is derived from crude petroleum, so conversion to some other forms of hydrocarbons is possible. So it is shocking that some people should put this process on the same level as that of the 'herbal fuel' invented by Ramer Pillai. True, this invention does not seem to have evoked as much excitement as it should have, and there are reasons for it. The commercial success of the venture will depend on the logistics of collecting/ sorting etc. Going by the massive deficit in fuel supply and demand, this process itself cannot fulfill our energy needs, though it can be a very good waste recycling tool. The novelty of the proces of IIP scientist is in the new catalyst, not in the concept of conversion as such. So, no one should doubt their credibility or intentions. Thinking aloud, a lot needs to be done on the front of science communication in India so that the real significance of scientistic work such as this one can be appreciated and supported by people. People should understand and encourage such work.

What can happen?
by Telley Gone on Nov 17, 2011 12:10 PM

Scientists will publish some 'papers' out of this;
Enrich their bio-data;
Steal the show for sometime until it wanes off;
Earn their salaries in the meantime;

Then think of .. ,, .. ,, ...

Kangress has made India a Third World Nation
by Chris on Nov 17, 2011 11:20 AM  | Hide replies

India has abundant Indigenous Energy Sources, and could have become self-sufficient in Energy by now :

1) Indigenous Bio-Fuels.

2) India is blessed with Solar energy.

3)The numerous waterfalls in the hills and mountains of India can power thousands of micro-hydro-power-stations.

4) The long coastline of India can be used to harvest tidal-power from the ocean currents.

5) India has nuclear energy expertise and thorium-sands.

Many decades ago, India could have achieved energy-independence, Like Brazil has.

Instead India continues to import crude-oil from the Arab nations, thereby pouring the India tax-payers' money into the coffers of the Arab nations.

Meanwhile, poor India coal-miners labour in wretched, unsafe coal-mines to mine coal, which is then used to power polluting thermal power stations.

The Kangress has pulled a massive Bio-Bofors on the People of India !

The Kangress Government will sabotage any attempts that India makes to become energy-independent.

On every single barrel of crude oil that is imported from the Arab countries, the Kangress earns kickbacks.

Therefore, the Kangress will do everything it can to ensure that India continues to import Arab crude-oil, for ever.

This is why Biofuels were quietly killed off in India, because if indigenous Indian Biofuels had succeeded, India might have become energy-independent like Brazil, and would have stopped imports of Arab crude-oil, and that would have ruined the Arab kickbacks for the Kangress.

Dear Friend

Qustion is not of BJP or Congress but how many COngress ruled this Party in name of Gandhi Parivar and what share BJP got? National Highways, Worli Sea Link, Mumbai - Pune Expressway, River linking, Nuclear programe.....in just 5 years? Why not congress did?

Looks like congress is smart in Giving Gandi paruwaar names. One day India will be Indira or Rahul of Jawaharlal on Sonia......

Any ways, unless people like us come and enter nto politics we should not lame it. We also to some extent responsible for giving bribe if not taking it.

I dont think this is commercially viable, many such claims have come forward and gone away in no time, this definitely looks like one of those.

Well, but...
by Rajib Chakraborty on Nov 17, 2011 11:05 AM

If what has been claimed is true (650-700 ml petrol from 1 kg plastic) and if the process of such production is reasonably cheap then such discovery deserves nothing less than a nobel prize. However, most likely there are certain ifs and buts and so this news has not spread like wildfire.

Also, Oil companies (big foreign ones) will do everything in their power to decimate any such discovery. Even the Government of India may not encourage such discovery because it would lead to cheap fuel and therefore lesser tax collection.

In short, it would be foolish to be optimistic and dream about cheap petrol from plastic (or from anything else) in the near future.
