blame the public
by ar on May 29, 2011 11:43 AM

government only is a representative of the people. Do you think a MLAs and party leaders who are only tiny percentage of entire population are responsible for the pathetic plight of bengal today? NO. It has to be the entire population who encouraged and supported them. If people are crooked then they focus only on pulling others down. When british ruled bengal they just forced these people to work and force worked and hence bengal did see some prosperity. Its decline started in 1900 when british left kolkata when they did not find any resistance in delhi. So, do not blame the politicians, blame the public instead.

Calcutta is a dying city

Rajiv Gandhi was wrong when he said "Calcutta is a dying city". The truth was "Calcutta is already a dead city"

Opportunity
by SA Jaffar on May 28, 2011 09:57 AM  | Hide replies

In the face of such painful existence, i think there is a golden opportunity. Considering Bengali's are intellectually very good along the creative lines. I think this is the right time for people to move ahead. 30 - 35 years of being left behind is a gap which has resulted with many people looking for jobs and the increasing notion of - lets do it atleast now.
I would request entrepreneurs and industrialists to request upon the new Government there to bring in an industrial friendly environment, cut this hartal and gherao atitude.
This is an opportunity for entrepreneurs and for Bengali's to now move ahead.

For that to happen, the present leaders in the government and the opposition will have to see the light of the day, decide and agree what is right for the state, shed their political colours and reach out to the masses with the right message about what is needed for the state, for themselves and for the future generations. Resorting to violence, strikes and processions just to show strength and pull down someone doing something good will take them nowhere, which has become ingraned in Bengali psyche. Bengalis, certainly some of the intellectuals with left leanings, love the rebel tag, one of them famously said recently in a national magazine that for him a leader reciting modern poetry and quoting from literature is more important than anything else. With that attitude nothing will happen to this state.

Now that Left has left Bengal (atleast the gaddi), will industries and businesses which left Bengal consider it right to re-enter?

Lets change ourselves.
by saptaswa sarkar on May 27, 2011 08:25 PM  | Hide replies

Being a Bengali, it is hard to tell but it is the fact that Bengalis are afraid of sudden change, they are, by and large, afraid of any new thing.. they are rather comfortable with tried ones. Though we need someone who is strict (some one like Narandra Nodi ?) in administration and can handle people in govt. But having said that I would say, on top of all these, We Bengalis need to change ourselves. We need to change ourselves to accept the fact and act accordingly. We need to change our perspective and our general attitude towards life. Because development is not about only agriculture or industries; its about our own character. When that happens, everything will fall in place in time. With that, development will take its own stride.
