great aircraft, great technology
by VijaySagar on May 30, 2011 12:23 PM

Good to see Boeing finally do their commercial testing. They will get good competition when Airbus comes out with their WB A-350. Thats one hellva aircraft too. Very similar to the dreamliner with similar interiors.

Air India has ordered several of these Dreamliners to run point-to-point services. Soon Air India passengers will be able enjoy flights on this modern airplane and Air Indis will regain its lost glory.

its time air india shut down. time we stopped these pseudo socialist policies of employment generation. Why India is a failed state today is becoz the nincompoops who have run this country to date have been running hotels, airlines and other businesses, instead of governing this nation.

some parts of boeing 787 are manufactured in tianjin
by biswanath roy on May 29, 2011 12:22 PM  | Hide replies

wikipedia reports that some parts(wing) of boeing 787 are being manufactured in tianjin(china).even airbus 320,319,321 etc are being fully assembled in tianjin for the last 2 years. india a "chamcha) of the west could not take oppurtunity from this & it had to be "enemy" china which benefitted.

For the last several decades, HAL has been manufacturing aircraft in collaboration with various foreign manufacturers. In fact, whenever India imports any civil or military aircraft, technology is transferred to HAL.

Now HAL has technology coming out of its ears. It does not need to be a sub-contractor for Boeing or Airbus. Given the necessary resources, HAL can manufacture world-class aircraft on its own.

Do you know where is Boing's largest maintenance hub outside US? Nagpur. (Ever heard of this place?)
Do you know a Tata company is already making parts for Boing / Airbus.
Wiki is a encyclopedia maintained by readers and never is fully reliable.
If you donot know enough about our country. update yourself before crying baby!!!!

by the way saraswat,i belong & live in nagpur & have gone and seen the so called boeing mro site @ nagpur.land acquisition work is still in place, & practically no work is going on. for your information deccan cargo & air india cargo have shifted their operations from nagpur to hyderabad.if you do not believe come down here & see for yourselves. before stating some nonsense verify at site. i do not have the habit of commenting without verification. moreover my son is the third seniormost person in "times of india",nagpur so my statements are based on facts. for your information both boeing & airbus have built MRO's in shanghai & tianjin which are operating for the last 2 years.

bunch of lies
by Saagar Bhatia on May 27, 2011 06:05 PM  | Hide replies

The number of lies hidden in this plan just goes to prove how far Americans will go to annex market share through corporate domination. The wing of the 787 is entirely of composite materials and in order to make the aircraft fuel efficicent (lighter weight), they have hidden key facts such a test failures of the wing on multiple occassions when the wing has buckled in stress tests. They have lied about the details of the failure of the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engine, composite fuselage (which does not show cracks as easily as metal and is known to absorb moisture as more and more flights are made). Composite materials for building airplanes just WONT last. Aluminium lithium alloys are a better combination in offering light weight as well as good electrical conductivity to fight lightning strikes. Even Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has amazing wing technologies for its helicopter divisions that, in my opinion, is more advanced than what they claim they are using for the 787. But rediff will never broadcast that. Its out of their capacity to run an investigation of that magnitude.
The other issue with Boeing is government subsidies which we just won't get into. The US with will get market share through its unfair business practices, enough said

I think saagar don't realize how rigorous the tests are.. There were issues initially but now it is coming out as great aircraft..I agree HAL has the capacity..but it takes more guts from management and hard work to convert high tech into product..

OK, so let me understand this:

Boeing is trying to hide the fact that "the win has buckled in stress tests", and sell the plane to airlines, so that they use the plane, it crashes, and severely dents Boeings reputation.

This is Boeing's plan??

Mr. Bhatia, you will surely have to find some other place to insult the readers' intelligence.

I dont get this. Boeing has a reputation of decades and theyir flights are much better in terms of safety. Most of the competitors have already perised, except Airbus. Do you feel Boeing will compromise the lives of 500 plus passengers for one of their products? India has the technology and know how, then why are we not putting it into practice? Corruption and lack of enthusiasm is worst than lack of knowledge!

Re: Re: bunch of lies

Firstly, the capacity is 350 passengers, secondly Airbus is not the only competitor in the years to come there will be at least two more major competitors in that segment of aircraft (200-300 ). Finally, this is a "safety last" attitude. Frustation is beyond the policy of Boeing which as made relatively safe aircrafts in the past despit the 737 with over 60 fatal crashes. The condemnation is the technology being used for this aircraft, the composite fuselage, the not making public wing stress test failures in design phase and the Rolls Royce trent engine which almost caused the Airbus 380 (Qantas Air) have a fatal accident. Keep yourself informed before making a statement. Now, mind you the intention is not to develop a fear of flying. It is very safe.

@Saagar Bhatia. There are no second chances in a flight. Although you seem to have put in a lot of news, i am not sure how much of it is relevant/valid today. The pile of information that you unloaded here..could be one of the results from Boeing's initial testing..ofcourse testing is meant to find defects..and probably they found and rectified them. Dont say that they are bringing out a commercial plane with such bugs not being rectified. You would a fool to say that we would be a fool to buy into whatever you say. And please stop, glorifying HAL. Its good to be patriotic, but not foolish.

you contradict yourself. First you say there are no second chances in a flight but then you fail to present any counter argument either for Boeing or for the deglorification of HAL. Have you been to any HAL site? I have. Have you seen any productions line for Boeing? I have. I work as an Aeronautical Engineer for Pratt & Whitney. Who knows more?

The plane has to pass rigorous tests specified by the FAA , European Air Safety orgs, and others all over the world. Boeing will not compromise on safety either in design or performance. The wings are bent to 250 % required stress. Just look for the phrase ' 787 wing test' in Youtube..and you will know the extent this company goes to design safe planes. The plane has already done a Thousand take offs and landings with FAA pilots ONBOARD. So stop making baseless statements Mr Bhatia

I don't understand. Nobody provided any data points to prove Mr. Bhatia is wrong. On the contrary he has given data. he may be wrong, but someone needs to disprove him. Also, jus because the market for Boeing is reputed and they can't afford to have a faulty product, does not mean their product can't be faulty. Until the Qantas/Cathay Pacific had engine fires/failures nobody questioned the RR engines in A-380, mind you Airbus is reputed too.
