A Psalm of Life
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Tell me not in mournful numbers,
Life is but an empty dream!
for the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.
Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal;
Dust thou art, to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul.

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way;
But to act, that each to-morrow
Find us farther than to-day.

Art is long, and Time is fleeting,
And our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating
Fneral marches to the grave.

In the world's broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of Life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattlt!
Be a hero in the strife!

Thrust no future,howe'er pleasant!
Let the dead Past bury its dead!
Act-act in the living Present!
Heart within, and God o'erhead!

Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And , departing , leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time;

Footprints that perhaps another,
Sailing o'er life's solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing, shall take heart again.

Let us , then, be up and doing,
With a heart for any face;
Still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labour and to wait..

a lesson for Media ...

The media (especially Pink) should learn a lesson that the welthiest person is not the one who has billions but who can donate for the welfare of billions. I rate Mr. Amar bose far above the Ambanis, Birlas etc.

The beneficiary does not necessarily have to be a professional beggar, for an act to be philanthropic.

Philanthropy, can be and frequently is, the act of supporting that which betters life for the larger populace, of humans generally, but in an increasingly enlightened world, also extending to other species.

Patronizing the arts: Shah Jahan, the Chola Kings. Supporting Literature. Building great monuments (not statues of self or elephants) for public good, the Dakhineshwar Kali temple - Rani Rashmoni. Patronizing Science - Tata Institute of Fundamental Research & Indian Institute of Science are all philanthropy.

A person belongs firs to the Karmabhoomi then Janmabhoomi. It is no more right to expect, an American, who succeeded in & because of the intellectual environment provided by America to support his country of origin, than it is to expect that a great person in Mumbai, who succeeded in & because of the opportunities of the city, should contribute exclusively to his place of birth.

Look at it from a different point.

Most of the times people of Indian origin are found on the receiver side of donations. This sets an example that people of Indian origin can (and want) to contribute to make the world (whether East or West) better place for all.

Just 1 mistake. He is not Mr. Bose. He is Prof. Bose. He was a faculty at MIT.

MIT vs IIT

Prof. Bose is an example to MIT students. How many faculties of our so called IITs can inspire their students to be an entrepreneur? There is none and with more dilutions, there will be none.

Not all professors, whether in MIT or IIT or anywhere else, need to inspire students to be entrepreneurs.

Professors should be able to inspire students to become best in their selected fields and, above all, "to become good and responsible human beings".

To do this, professors must set examples ("Be the change you want to see") rather than giving only lectures but not following their own lectures.

Prof Bose has shown younger generation how to be a great student, how to be a great professor, how to be a great entrepreneur, and how to donate wealth for good causes.

I'm speculating but I suspect that if Prof. Bose has a gardner / domestic help, very likely it would be an immigrant from some really advanced & wealthy country like Mexico / Philipines /Bangladesh or maybe even our beloved homeland. Very likely, these people are "good and responsible human beings".

You will appreciate, that Prof. Bose's contribution to humanity, in general would be a little more than above referred domestic help.

Thus, it would be good, if leading institutes produced a little more than "good and responsible human beings".
