Improve Food Productivity

The three obvious steps to balance mismatch b/w demand & supply are : (a) waiving import taxes on food items/grains; (b) Maintain sufficient stockpile; and (c) prevent hoarding. These have possibly been resorted to.

As for productivity increase, besides aiming at "high yielding seeds" we must look for and encourage development of FERTILSER/PLANT NUTRIENT ALTERNATIVES that can improve yield. Mention should be made of the 'NANOTECHNOLOGY IN AGRICULTURE' CONFERENCE on 21/22 of this month in HYDERABAD which will shower great ideas in this regard. Herein lies our FUTURE.

People feel the pain due to increasing staple food prices. We, consumers, have to adjust our calories and when it becomes difficult we unleash our anger. This can have serious effects leading to turmoil. Hasty decisions likely to exacerbate the problems need avoidance.

We are also in for a global rise in prices of specially: Rice, and Grains. Supplies could be squeezed in about few months from now.Add to this the devaluation of the Dollar and significant increase in food related commodity prices stare at us. Global weather pattern shift change the rain pattern. La Nina caused already heavy rains in Australia & Brazil and altered monsoons in India & East Coast. Result will be an imbalance b/w world supply & demand during the latter part of this year. We also need to be prepared for that. Likelihood of "s

More than all of these...

More important that all these steps would be to rethink on the "right to food" bill. With more than 50% of the population being farmers, if right to food is a reality, govt would force farmers to sell their produce at much below the prevailing market prices spiralling poverty and general public dissatisfaction. Due to poor pricing, if these farmers stop producing, a much bigger catastrophe is waiting to happen.

All polilies of this govt have been stupid and, forget an economist, even an ordinary person with common sense can think through them. But our *honest* economist PM and his cabinet that is full of highly educated lumineries could not think these through. Either they are all corrupt or that they simply lack common sense.

NREGA is another classic example. Our stupid PM thinks that if every person is given a dole of Rs. 100 without producing any valuable output, India will be able to get rid of poverty. The result is in front of everyone. Dal which was selling at Rs. 25 shot up to Rs. 100 and rice selling at Rs. 15 shot up tp Rs. 50. It is the same story with rest of the food items and vegetables.

Food Inflation

It seems that the Govt. is deliberately using the inflation as an engine for growth (may be a far fetched imagination) but it is hesitant to admit it on record ! This may be due to galvanise the economy which had earlier received set back due to recession, to put recession out of bounds !

1.Eliminate all transportation bottle-neck and ensure fast movement of goods from the field to the consumer/cold storage.Ensure 100% yield and zero damage.

2.Allow Wall Mart,ITC etc to open retail chain for all essential commodities including vegetables.

3.Single out items and state to hold temporary intervention to stabilize the price of those items.

4.Rapidly promote food processing industries.

5.Intensify crackdown on price speculation and punish those found hoarding commodities and pushing up prices by illegal means.

I agree to your points for the food inflation subject.
Agriculture produce is priced only by the middleman and not by the farmer. Its said that the prices fluctuate according to the demand and supply. Tell me how many farmers are aware of this formula. Each and every Taluk/Block has to be identified for their respective crops and a pre programming of cultivation planned to maintain proper supply and price for every food grain and vegetables. The farmer also should know what exactly he should do right from sowing till marketing his produce. Rest it depends on monsoon factor also.
