We need both
by One Liner on Feb 08, 2011 12:43 AM

Of course we need to go beyond Sujal to Swach. But that would require a company like Tata's or at least some capability to sustain like Biocon. But such companies are limited and India needs innovation in every sector. So we need Sujal which is a leap-frog jump from the broken aluminium pans used for storing water yet affordable to most. Even Swach is not affordable to many. And even bigger problem is to make people aware that they need gadgets such as swach. And most of the people when they attain that level of awareness, would have a better economic level to buy 'AcquaGuard'.

cover up

Jugad is a word coined by columnists working for business men of 1980s and 90s to cover up corrupt business practices to sell it as something beneficial to society.

Death Penalty to corrupts
by ManPasand Singh on Feb 07, 2011 04:43 PM

Let there be fairplay. Anybody found to be taking advantage of the system using Juggad(contacts), position, money should be hanged. There has been reveleations against ministers in UPA cabinet, business houses such as Ambani brothers, Journalists such as Nira Radia/Barkha dutta. These people should not go scott free. They should be jailed for fraud acts.

Please get your facts correct. India is not the 3rd richest country in the world (officially). Unofficially you can claim anything. The fact is that Out of all developing nations India has the highest percentage of people living under poverty! What a rich nation we are!!

It is necessary to dismantle Delhi. In the past Kings used to put money where they earned. Not any more. They put the money where they can eat it- Did you notice how much money is siphoned off from Income areas tro Delhi?Look around and you will find the Congress govt has systematically moved the money from old income generation areas over last 60 years to those areas where they think they could create vote banks. You will be surprised at the mishandling of this income from these areas where it is generated to those where it is consumed without any return. Take Delhi what does it has except a grand city of BABUS.Every Minister or official after retirement stays there- his kids go about dong liason work in ministeries. This has gone on from Mughal Times. This is the group which ultimately breeds corruption there - they do not do any useful work but help in passing bribes.Mohammed Bin Tiglak got so much frustrated that he shifted his capital to South because he could not cope up with such wheeler dealers. Dismantle Delhi and India will develop!

Most Babus are from Bihar/UP. They have a big nexus, so that they create a colony where by key positions are held by people from these communities. As a results, most deserving officers never get awarded where as most corrupts get scott free. I've never seen a Bihari excelling in any other field such as medicine, sceinfic researc or even enterpreneurship. But they top in corruption list. This must stop.

U r talking abt planning!!! Industrial areas of Uttaranchal is carved out of the fertile land of Pantnagar (one of the most fertile irrigated land of India) & distributed to industrialists at very low price (majority gone to politicians pocket) with all kinds of tax benefits. My question is - Is it worth setting up industries on farm lands when there is so much of Food Shortage in INdia?? Don't we have barren lands elsewhere where these can be setup!!! Its true, industrialization has given employment to lot of people but has it brought development in the supporting infrastructure viz roads/highways, electricity. It was absurd decision to set up industry @ Haridwar & Rudrapur.

Structured Innovation
by Raja Srinivasan on Feb 07, 2011 02:51 PM  | Hide replies

We should aim at (a) fostering special institutions capable of engaging in product/process/policy innovations benefiting the socially & economically deserving segment of the population; and (b) promoting knowledge & education in respect of structured innovaation (jugaad to an extent is a popular nomenclature in our context) to reduce information asymmetry, improve understanding, involvement & participation to enable a synergestic combination of mainstream(urban) with the excluded (rural!).

"Tata Swach" is a good example of a structured organisation of innovation experience by the Industry. It has quite a few elements of the aims stated in the earlier paragraph. Industry is also most suited to encourage structured innovation avoiding the time, space and resource constraints mentioned by the authors.

Many innovations (in agricultural, transportation & energy sectors) with capacity to break ground dramatically at national/global levels will emerge in the process.

It is an opportune time and the budget exercise may well create some special space for promotion of this imperative - w/r in particular to the Agri Sector.
