Structured Innovation
by Raja Srinivasan on Feb 07, 2011 02:51 PM

We should aim at (a) fostering special institutions capable of engaging in product/process/policy innovations benefiting the socially & economically deserving segment of the population; and (b) promoting knowledge & education in respect of structured innovaation (jugaad to an extent is a popular nomenclature in our context) to reduce information asymmetry, improve understanding, involvement & participation to enable a synergestic combination of mainstream(urban) with the excluded (rural!).

"Tata Swach" is a good example of a structured organisation of innovation experience by the Industry. It has quite a few elements of the aims stated in the earlier paragraph. Industry is also most suited to encourage structured innovation avoiding the time, space and resource constraints mentioned by the authors.

Many innovations (in agricultural, transportation & energy sectors) with capacity to break ground dramatically at national/global levels will emerge in the process.

It is an opportune time and the budget exercise may well create some special space for promotion of this imperative - w/r in particular to the Agri Sector.
