All scrap data, no idea from where rediff got? At least they should check their proofs. Give a look about Bangalore (say 3rd but kept in 5th), Chennai, Kochi (2nd biggest city in India/Kerala?).
Chennai population data is much less. Metro population:8696010 as per 2011 Census data. Rediff should correct it. However Chennai population density is currently highest of all metros.
I strongly believe any city with 5 million population should check its further growth to allow better life sustain. One can see Dhaka in Bangladesh as very densly populated, but its not at all attractive due to poverty, dirt, huge crowds as germs etc. its matter of worry that many Indian cities crossing 10 million mark. Large city means stressfull traffic hours, wastage of important life hours in journey daily, not able to visit most part of cities for years or even for lifetime, limited social circle and depression for most newly settled outsiders etc. One example I can cite is Kolkata, the mad rush of huge crowd at howrah station, the heavy vehicle traffic in howrah bridge and the resulting insanity among sane people due to immense frustrations..

vinod kumar- you are 100% correct. but how many indians, planners, politicians, bureaucrats, understand this.
All those listed here are big by quantity (population), but weak in quality. If we talk reverse, I can cite mainly 2 cities: 1. Jamshedpur - The first fully planned and very well maintained city of India, one of UN global compact cities. Be there to beleive the quality of life it provides. 2. Chandigarh - Another newly planned and well maintained city.
It says Delhi population is 22 million and Mumbai population is 21 million. For Delhi it says it is the second-largest by population in India, after Mumbai. What gives?
isn't bangalore a metropolitan city..? this article just says bangalore is third most populous city and fifth most populous urban agglomeration. this then leaves out there to be just four metro cities in india.

Exactly. That proves the difference between the city dwellers calling it so... and to be officially declared to be so.

Add to that Hyderabad population have the highest potential to pee. In hot summer, when even rivers go dry, the footpaths in Hyderabad have a perennial flow of pee.
1. New Delhi Population: 22 million, according to the new Census data. The national capital territory of Delhi (NCT) is the largest metropolis by area and the second-largest by population in India, after Mumbai. It is the eighth largest metropolis in the world by population
2. Mumbai Population: 21 million, according to the new Census data. It is the most populous city in India, and the fourth most populous city in the world. The financial hub of India, Mumbai attracts people from all over India.
According to rediff, 21 millon is more than 22 millon. Jai Ho.
