Despite all the recent developments, the Reddy brothers
by piri on Aug 24, 2011 06:47 PM

still remain very much in power !!

The REddy brothers had been operating illegal mines (for which no royalty is to be paid to the govt. simply because they are not supposed to have existed) for more than a decade, even before they joined the BJP. There are many accounts that state that they used to ship out tens of barges (each barge holding 3 to 4 thousand tonnes) every day for several years ! And each barge load of illegally mined ore netted an average profit of around Rs. 2 crores to the operator !

Just take out a calculator and work it out to see how many lakhs of crores they (along with their ring members consisting of partymen, party leaders - remember how Sushma Swaraj rushed to Bangalore to support them when it seemed that Yeddyurappa might have his way and succeed in dropping the Reddy brothers from the cabinet - govt. officials, contractors, barge operators, customs officials, excise officials, preventive intelligence people, etc.) made out of stealing national resources !!

Read in detail what the Karnataka Lok Ayukta has to say on the Reddy brothers' 'exploits' and on how much profit illegal mines earn their masters ! He has stated that more than 90 % of the value in the international market will be profit !! Which other illegal business (leave alone legal ones) yields such a profit margin ??

Why is the BJP leadership so indebted to these brothers ?

Great report
by Krishna Kumar on Aug 24, 2011 06:17 PM

Very comprehensive and good coverage of how the mess started. Interesting to know that Mr Reddy, like most other ministers today, started as a good for nothing, poor-at-studies, duffer. Sad that this is the fate of our country.

Bellary: How unrestrained mining turned it to dust

India needed the preciious foreign exchange particularly the dollor variety.

we had been mining and exporting the iron ore during the last 30 to 40 years. from orissa, karnataka and goa etc. MMTC a govt of India undertaking is one of the facilitator.

the government at the centre and states should have done the monitoring to prevent environmental degradation and the miususe of minimg licenses.

they did not do it as it was convenient fot the foreign exchange receipt and nslept on the issue.

and now the minimg industry is blamed.

even now our overall export is 25 % 35 % less than all our imports in dollar value.

the s/w and and its allied industries pay the 50% of our fuel bill.

we have to export, streamline our manufacturing, and process industries and white goods and computer and electronics industries to reduce our dependence on imports and then export substantially to pay for other imports.

the task is nmade more difficult with the sort of opposition to nano factory in west bengal.

the critics should have responsibilty for solving the problems and not creating other problems.

What an attempt at mis-direction! Are people stupid not to understand the basic fact that the mining earning is that of the owner, not of the nation. In fact, the excess earning does not even show up in the country, but straight away reaches the foreign accounts of the direct/ indirect owners. In most cases the extra production is not even reported officially.

The claim is similar to the reported statement of a senior politician that the black-money in the swiss accounts is good for the nation as it is used for the development of the country!

there should be a mechanism to prevent the illegal flow of foreign exchasnge earning outside the country. that is the job of the government and the reserve bank, the financeministry.
