In terms of economic activity, there is little to crow about
by piri on Apr 21, 2011 06:19 PM  | Hide replies

Mumbai and Delhi rising in status as they have two advantages over western cities in general :

1. An extremely neo-liberal economic policy followed by the Indian govt. that throws open more and more of the country's natural resources and domestic market to predatory capital in ways that are very far from transparent and

2. Ever increasing populations owing to increased migration from hinterlands. This migration is forced mostly by grinding poverty in the hinterlands which again is entirely due to the neo-liberal policies and giving up of gigantic quantums of revenue by the state in the form of corporate tax cuts !

Ironically, the western cities (with which Mumbai and Delhi are closing gaps) and the nations they represent are among the chief beneficiaries from the neo-liberal policies of the Indian govt. !!

And as far as matters other than 'economic activity' (what a beautifully obfuscative phrase) are concerned, can 'slum and excreta littered' Mumbai and Delhi come anywhere near (let alone close gaps) even Chinese or Russian or SA cities (other BRICS nations) leave alone western ones ????

It is not all that I see in Indian cities. But it is certainly the most visible part of any Indian metro to anyone observing with dispassionate eyes !

And this sight becomes all the more stark and conspicuous only because the Indian middle class (and the Indian corporate media that lives on the middle class) strives its best to pretend as though it does not exist !!

,a term coined by linguist James Matisoff,is a grouping of countries and regions that are currently inhabited with a majority Chinese population or were historically under heavy Chinese cultural influence.

Six of the top 10 cities in the Economic Activity category are Chinese cultural sphere.

They are Tokyo(3),Shanghai(5),Singapore(6),Hongkong(7),Seoul(8),Beijing(9).

Others are New York(1),London(2),Paris(4),Los angeles(10).

Japan was never under heavy Chinese cultural influence. In fact Japan was closed to the outside world until the Meiji restoration in mid 19th century. From that point in mid 19th century till the 1980's China was hardly the China of today.

Oh!
You are too clever to be fooled even on such a tiny issue.

You must be a historical consultant of Indian MEA.

Tokyo is as Chinese as Paris is German or Berlin is French.

Just because people look similar does not mean squat.

For example people look similar but Patna and Pune are hardly similar. Most Indians could live in Pune, how many would want to live in Patna? Not me.

Mumbai is okay but why Delhi the rape and crime capital of the world. The most backward place on the planet where women are killed for dowry and honour and raped at home, in cabs, cars, public transport whatever
