Almost all airlines do impose 'embargo' on certain days or certain period for personal travel. They even put restriction for duty travel for non-operating staff. It is not a new thing as the AI staff claims. Why the big noise? Some staff must have manipulated bookings so that there will be 'no shows' on departure hence a restriction even for 'standby' tickets.
Most airlines in the USA only permit Staff travel for leisure on a standby basis and you are assigned a seat 20 minutes before the flight, which may be taken away even when you are on the plave if a last minute paying passenger shows up!

Air India is best no doubt, but unwanted staff is not-govt. is not dare enough to chuck them out.
Penny wise pound foolish , by implementing ban for travelling during weekly offs , staff will take offs on working days resulting loss of precious menhours.

Majority of them are not needed-actually surplus, but govt. is not dare enough to chuck them out.
Air India is eaten up by its employees only, they have plenty of unwanted staff, getting fat salaries more than 3-4 times comparing to their counterparts in other places, govt. does not have guts to curb them or chuck them out. Few technicals may be lesser paid, Actually all govt. servants must be banned to avail their perqs. during peak hours including railways, and other places too, they must be allowed in lean period only, as happens in private sector, leave does not become right or perqs. of such nature is not a right, whereas in Govt. it is their ego and right.
