unique way to honour
by R Balasubramanian on Apr 01, 2011 01:44 PM  | Hide replies

An unique way to honour a great innovative man. This is possible only in Europe where talent is recognised and rewarded.

The first car industry in India was set up by Birla group in Calcutta under the brand name Ambassador. In case of two wheeler it was Bajaj in Scooter and Yezdi in two wheeler (Enfield is from england), The tragedy is both Ambassador and Yezdi have seen the grave and Bajaj has survived with Japanese technology new generation bikes. This clearly shows the government and people of india's mind set up. Most of the ambassador cars in many government departments are in depleted and rusty state with almost all engines removed except the bonnet, lined up for auction but no takers. Its pity though Gandhi fought for Be Indian Buy Indian, majority indians even after 63 years independence still ape western culture and dress. I bet, none of the big names in this country still possess an Ambassador car. Indeed its indian royal car even today.

The case of the Ambasador should not be viewed as Indian accepting things that are foriegn made rather a case where the company could not evolve over a period of time and therefore deeming the offering extinct. Maruti would have had the same fate had they not increased the product portfolio. I know you would say that Maruti is Japanese but so is Ambasador...the engines were being supplied by Isuzu...

Ambassadors are still being mass produced from Hind Motors, Kolkata. They are fitted with Issuzu Diesel Engine (Japanese) and is plying in Kolkata mostly as yellow Taxis and also Govt. cars. They are roomy, spacious and very sturdy on pot holed roads.

even though you grow old, you are a child to your parents till your death.
Dont forget the past. They are your guide to future, if you have.

Yes. it may not look cozy compared to todays cars on road but is elegent, sturdy and roomy. I know, most of taxis plying in calcutta are ambassadors driven by Sardarjis. Its delight to look at taxis piling up at traffic juctions during night. Even in Delhi ambassadors are used as taxis.
