Gear or AT should not make a difference
by Kumar KTS on Sep 09, 2010 03:22 PM

People who say driving manual is better are the likes who think the road is a race track. The objective is to get from point A to Point B safely . If some one thinks his driving becomes robotic just because the gears are not there ,then this person has a pea sized brain

The driving pleasure with gears !!!
by chanakya maurya on Sep 06, 2010 04:32 PM  | Hide replies

This is something that the human must refrain from depriving her/him/self.

Let us not reduce the driver to a mere robotic presence.

The process of changing gears is to quite a great extent a sheer pleasure rather than pain.

Depriving of that pleasure leaves driving somewhat lackluster.

Anyone who has driven an automatic for atleast a week will laugh off at your comments. There is nothing more robotic than pressing clutch and changing a lever different positions. It requires no skill and it is pure manual labour. Machines are invented to reduce such meaningless labour. If pressing a pad 200 times an an hour and changing a lever position equal number of times is what beings you pleasure, you need medical help.

After getting carried away into the world of automatics, the gears would reappear after a decade with a blasphemy of luxury !

ATs are boring
by Argumentative Indian on Sep 04, 2010 01:22 PM

ATs are good basically for people who find the actual act of driving the machine a chore. They may, at times, enjoy the other aspects of driving, like feeling the rush of wind in their face (with open windows) or enjoy the countryside from the windows, but the actual communication of machinery with man (machines somehow don't communicate that well with most women) is beyond their pale.

The true pleasure of motoring can only be had with manual transmissions. Hence, all real sports cars & SUVs that are actually designed to do more than drop kids to school on smooth suburian roads, have manual transmissions.

Cars for the masses, especially in countries with little or no public transport like the US / Middle East usually have ATs. Since the US is a car loving country, but again, a majority enjoy the associated pleasures of driving than the real communication of man and machine, you have the phenomenon of SUVs & 'Sports Cars' (Ford Mustang for e.g.) with ATs.

AT Cars

I myself hv been driving AT cars in UAE for for the last 4 years.AT cars are much easier to drive in a traffic chaotic country like india.having driven swift in chennai ,it is a pain to drive manual car after you drive a AT car. but there is some myth in india that AT cars are more fuel consuming.i m sure it will go away in time.

I think ATs are good for people, who view cars as transportation or an alternative to a subway or bus, but are too poor to afford a chauffeur, which would typically mean a majority of the population of the US & Middle East.

Low fuel economy of an AT is NOT a myth, its reality, especially in a traffic chaotic country like India.

ATs in my opinion, are the true democracy & egalitarianism of the Automotive world, that allows a non intuitive bozo to drive as well as someone, to whom every noise, sound, vibration of the car, is no less than the purring & moaning of a lover. In manual transmission, the 'pain' the control of which gear to drive in, is completely in the hands of the driver. Whether the driver is comfortable with such control or not, is upto the driver's equation with the car.

One of the important things said about driving a Ford Mustang, on a date, is announcing to your date that you can't handle a manual transmission.

Any real sports car, comes only with Manual Transmission.

We in India dont have proper roads by the way. Clutch and go traffic is bad for our knees. We dont have sporting arena on the public roads. We need cars to be driven on roads and we dont want sports cars. My vote is for Auto transmission

I have lived in UAE almost all my life and am currently in US. Both UAE and US have autotransmission cars are overwhelming favorites, but the real reason why AT is nto popular in India is maintenance and replacement costs.

It costs at least four times more for an auto transmission to be replaced after 100,000 miles of drivetime than it does in a manual transmission set.

Also, throughout the lifespan auto transmissions cannot be ignored with the transmission oil replacements and so forth, but manual transmission is pretty easy to maintain.

But I do agree that in the LUXURY CAR SEGMENT in India, there still remains a very low adoption rate for AT which is a head scratcher.

Almost no Indian who owns a Luxury car drives himself / herself, hence any extra investment on AT is for Driver Comfort, which does not feature in the calculations.

Need help from automobile enthusiasts!!
by nisha thoas on Sep 03, 2010 05:59 PM  | Hide replies

I must admit(rater shame faced), that I dont know much about automobiles. The statement '67PS at 6200rpm and 90Nm of peak torque at 3500rpm", made no sense to me. WIll someone be kind enough to explain in laymanterms what it means? I am an engineer myself, but in the electrical domain. Esp what does torque have to do with performance of a vehicle? Also, when they say 1.2 l or 1.4 L, it means Litres of what?? How is it significant? I know the queries look dumb, but there are many like me. So please :)

You dont understand Toque, RPM and call yourself an Electrical Engineer! Just wondering which school / college you did your class XII and Ele. Engineering.

This is just another pointer to the quality of Engineering education In India. I am sure you must be working as a cyber coolie, you can do nothing other than coding!

Hi you should not be so rude to a SW engineer (mentioning cyber coolie). By the way do you know coding. You may be master of a car but the same car might have an onboard computer which is coded by these coolies which you mentioned. So dont underestimate any discipline of engineering. All are required for life.

Torque is a turning force, so force X distance (length of the lever) = N (Newton) X m (meter). Its the force you apply to open a door.

Torque accelerates the car. Highest acceleration is at peak torque.

However, engine torque is NOT transmitted 1:1 to the wheel, it is changed by the Gears, (transmission) before going to the wheel. However, due to the law of conservation of energy, the higher the torque in a gear, the lower the top speed of that gear.

Power is work done / unit of time, i.e. Force (N) X Displacement (m) / Time (s), usually measured in Watts (in electrical engg., for e.g.), except in the case of Automobiles, where Horse Power HP is preferred. PS is Metric HP or the German term for HP and is equal to roughly 0.98 HP which itself is like 746 W.

For two cars with the same torque, the higher power PS car will have a higher top speed and will be able to shift from a lower gear to a higher gear faster, assuming both cars have the same gear ratios.

1.2L or 1.4L represents the engine size (volume of each cylinder of the engine X no. of cylinders) in liters.

Larger the engine, more the power, greater the fuel consumption. Though modern engines now claim far better fuel efficiency at higher engine sizes or displacements than older engines.

Torque is also important for climbing slopes. So you'll often find high power - medium torque sedans (I drive one similar) taking a climb slowly in a lower gear, while a medium or similar power, high torque SUV zooms through the climb, or at least climbs relatively faster.
