Nitin Nohria at the helm at Harvard
by Biplab Ganguly on May 07, 2010 04:33 PM

What a feather in the community of Indian Academics! Men like Prof Nohria,Prof Sugata Bose(Gardiner Prof. of history at Harvard)and other distinguished Indians in their quest for and imparting of knowledge have made this university such a distingushed and sought after seat of learning. They are often criticised for remaining out of the country-however the guardians of education in India should create the right environment in our research centres and universities,in order to enable them devote more time in our institutions.

I really dont care what drives or doesnt drive him.

What I want to know is what doesnt drive folks to be good professors and faculty in top schools in India (I have given up on the rest).

Is it pay scale, too much beuracracy, red tape, no recoginition......

I am sure there are a bunch of dedicated folks in India, but this article seems to say that this dean is sort of above the rest.

We expect Multi-culturalism in Academic Community deepens we shall certainly in decades to come several Indian Celebrities in different Scools of Academic Excellence in the west .Of course Chandra Shekhar and Hargobind Khurana are to-notch makers of Contemporary Astronomy ,genetics respectively Amartya Sen makes the Econmic Nobel .However,
Jagdish Bhagwati of Columbia is equally Seminal on Trade Theory even if he missed Nobel-Prize these several yrs.
We hope that indians in India may soon find inspiration from workers like S. Ramanujan our XX-century Genius who left slew of problems in abstract Theory of Numerical Partitions that modern topologists find seminal even after 100 yrs of his times.D.Goel

Recenetly a gujarati immigrant remarked that indians are making it big in US only because of the greatness of that country. Becasue if th eindians are truly remarkable, they should not be making it in India itself, their mother country. How much talent one has unless one has a nurturing environment , true genius may not flower.
