Due to the growing importance of wireless communication, China is trying to fix it. In 2006, China raised WAPI standard (developed by a small company in Xi'an city) by using different algorithm to enhance the data security. But China got big trouble from IEEE and ISO that are basically controlled US companies and also US government. US gov even refused to grant VISAs to Chinese scientists to a related important IEEE meeting in US.
Even IEEE and ISO try hard to block WAPI from becoming an international standard, China is still using it and required it in wireless devices that are sold in China.

Where does the auther get this imagination? Huawei and ZTE are big companies. Huawei's sales reached more than US$20billion last year and is still growing fast even the world economy is in trouble. More important is that Huawei and ZTE's products entered all the countries including US. Huawei was the winner of the first 4G contract in Ause. the first 4g deal in Sweden. Norway's Telenor gave its 4G update contract to huawei. The more important is that Telenor used to use Ericsson equipements. Huawei is now the 3rd largest telecom eaquipment maker (If not 2nd) by revenues.
In telecom areas, Chinese companies are not followers any more. Several ITU industry standards came out from Chinese companies. Huawei was the No. 1 by the number of patent application in 2008 and the 2nd in 2009 according to the WIPO data.
