unshacke market but not corruption
by surajit som on May 09, 2010 07:38 PM

historically indians are good in money matters.british colonialism smashed indian economy. after independence nehruvian socialism could not deliver much. free market after 1991 helped us. to progress further we need good infrastructure -bijli,pani ,sadak, school, hospital. like china has done.corruption is like gas in the stomach-to some extent inevitable. but it should not become diarriah. the system should be able to catch and punish people like lalit modi.but entrepreneurship-honest one - should be nurtured.

Percieved Game

It is important to clearly differentiate between an issue and business of the issue.Cricket is different from business of cricket.Education is different from business of education.Medicine and law are different from practise of law and medicine which is a profession.Cricket is a profession to few as the infracture is not provided. Thus no one professes cricket.Because cricket gives tangible benefits to the player in terms of money, fame and health.Whereas it gives only entertainment to masses which is actually forced and subtely turning it into a cult of consumerism where every one gets dragged inside just as religion in medieval ages. The objection to business of cricket and hence IPL is that watching cricket is not cricket. And making money from cricket is still farther from cricket.Sane people do differentiate but what about gullible commoner, who gets carried away by the hidden agenda. He is swept away as the carpet slides under his feet. The state has then to step inside and set things right.Thats what happened. When taxes were waived and monies laundered under the name of entrepreneurship some one has to ring the bell.Tharoor did it as things soured up for him.He payed the price. There is nothing wrong with business of cricket but there are rules in business too.As it is a 'Dharma' to some elite communities who are seriously into it for centuries.Where they have recognition and reputation. But when these tenets are desecrated its Disaster. We are witness to this sorrow everywhe

Full of verbosity without conveying much

I agree with those who have said that this article does not convey much. Das disappoints, as he meanders without offering solutions whilst defending capitalism.

IPL not in trouble but just a phase
by Nikhil Shah on May 08, 2010 10:45 PM  | Hide replies

The removal of Lalit Modi is similar to the success of Ganguly and Manmohan Singh. India it too large of a country to adapt to changes positive or negative and tends to get contructive and destructive until a consensus is reached.

The important aspect after 1991 has been the balance of payment crisis can now be avoided which hurt India in 1957, 1980 and 1991. With FOREX reserves of about only $1 billion in 1991 the current reserves are about $300 billion and this is a very positive trend because the Indian govt also has made sure it bought back some of the gold as well.

After 1991, India has about 600 million mobile phones and 138 million TV sets out of the 242 million families. So life overall has improved with the economy showing up in the form of extra disposable incomes for a majority of the families.

Out of the 240 million families, the Indian goverment has allocated $2 billion for the Mid-day meals which may not get the 100% coverage but still is a massive program which is positive impacting millions of children accross India.

Though it has a long way to go, there is light in the end of the tunnel which never was seen in the 1970s where India registered a -10% GDP growth in one of the worst case scenarios.

The average GDP growth has been 7% since 1991 and before that is was only 2-3 % for several decades.

Mediocre
by kongo rudy on May 04, 2010 01:47 PM

I think this article is written in a very mediocre way. The author has tried to bring in the raise & fall of capitalism during the course, but failed to reveal the reasons why it failed or succeeded aptly.

Such a kind of approach is good in a blog and I am sorry to say Rediff has once again proven itself to be a blog than anything else, by publishing such an article.
I think the books from Mr. Das are becoming monotonous, especially after the success of "India Unbound".

Modi is no great entrpreneur- he had a monopoly
by shali vahana on May 04, 2010 11:58 AM  | Hide replies

Gurucharan das is wrong in praising Modi for being a great entrepreneur, whiz kids and other accolades. There is no virtue in a monopoly. ICL came first and they were put down in a very un-market way, by banning players, punishing them, eventually ICL closed, nothing cannot run without stars and without institutional support. Where is the competition ? it is a brazen monopoly with cricket stars. So stop praising Modi, his hubris brought his downfall.

Half naked exported Cheergirls - this is appealing to the voyeuristic mentality. There're many indian acrobats, ball jugglers or street artists who could have been used for cheerleading - this way local artisans could had made extra money during IPL season. Social causes could have also been promoted.

well..we need to hire zinta, rai, shetty and some of the well-endowed vamps to do the cheerleading, in that case. Rural India has many fair complexioned, supple bodied (flexible), busty girls - can't they be trained to do these gyrations. Atleast it will keep some of the jobs in India and the costs down!
