When is gratuity payable? (As per Economic Times article)
Gratuity is payable to an employee on the termination of employment after he has rendered continuous service for not less than five years or such other time as prescribed in respect of the specified industries/sectors.
Termination of employment may be on account of superannuation or retirement or resignation or death or disablement due to accident or disease. In the unfortunate event of death or disablement, the aforesaid time limit is waived off.

You are completely wrong. Please go through the contract letter of your company. Gratuity is paid if your association with the company is as per gratuity contract, it depends from company to company, generally minimum is 2 years. If you resign from your company and your association with the company is as per gratuity minimum stay contract, your company will have to pay you the Gratuity amount. However, if you resign and leave the company before gratuity minimum stay contract, your Gratuity amount will be gone.
