Have you guys heard of Narayana Hrudayalaya, Bangalore, pioneered by Dr. Deviparasad Shetty? Now thats what I call quality healthcare at affordable costs with personal attention. If compassion is what every patient and his/her family needs, then thats the place you need to see... I am not sure of the other healthcare centers, but here. i am talking out of personal experience. This hospital makes you believe that Doctors are indeed next to God.

All of them are mere plumbers when compared to Dr. K. M. Cherian
by Anil Kumar on Jul 22, 2010 12:03 AM  | Hide replies

India's greatest cardiac surgeon is Dr. K. M. Cherian from Frontier Lifeline, Chennai. All other cardiac surgeons in India are mere plumbers when compared to him. The only one comparable to him was Dr. P.Venugopal, former director of AIIMS. But success went to Dr. Venugopal's head, and now he is not to be heard of.

Ignore this, this is purely a paid article, which is essential for the media traders to survive. I am in medical field since last 25 years, and I too know the truth.

Kudos to Dr. Trehan
by sanjay shashank on Jul 21, 2010 01:10 PM  | Hide replies

Kudos to the vision of Dr. Trehan in creating state of art Hospital to provide quality services to the patient. As stated by Dr Trehan, he has tied up with world-class Research Institutes to develop new biomarkers in the field of Neurosciences, Cancer, and Bone & Joint treatment. This will certainly help our patients in long run.

I appreciate his futuristic approach to bring an era of Predictive testing in India which will be a milestone in Indian Healthcare Industry as this not only helps normal Healthy Individual to predict for lifestyle disorders but also saves his expenses in future for undergoing treatment, medication and surgery. Many such gene based predictive tests are available in West but are yet to come to India. We even have cardiac maker tests which can predict the onset of cardiac disease much earlier than the assessment based on normal symptom or routine laboratory tests. One of the latest markers even suggests the acceptance or rejection of new grafts in case of cardiac surgeries.

We should feel proud that we have such farsighted person in India who is ready to take Indian Healthcare Industries to a new height.

Great Idea
by Murali Krishnan on Jul 21, 2010 12:14 AM

I think most of them who read this would be absolutely certain that this institute can never make a profit. Exactly !! you are right. This guy build this not for profit but for accomplishments, the people who lose money in this are the VC's and he does'nt care about them losing money. Even if he went public, its like taxing a group of affluent (not exactly but close to) people to have had build such a nice hospital.. This is an fine example of a communist idea winning over greedy capitalist. I pray that this hospital does not make profit on its initial investment, else it wont serve the purpose of providing affordable care. Once it gets a reputation for quality , doctors would like to be affiliated just for the sake of the brand. I think this idea will work good.

Not all bad
by BR on Jul 21, 2010 12:00 AM

These facilities are for the ultra-rich. But most doctors from well-to-do hospitals then take time and money out of their own pockets to visit near-by villages every week and provide treatment for free . I am not sure whether medicines and treatment are free, but at least their visits is for free. If they could even treat for free , that would really make indian healthcare a wonderful system.
Health Care Insurance definitely a no-no.

I Was the first tofeel the generocity of Dr Trehan at medanta.
by Rajendra on Jul 20, 2010 11:56 PM

My friend had a heart attack and hails from east godavari district of Andhra Pradesh in Janawary. He is 48 years old, and had a 90% block in LAD . we were advised stent , but having done the research that stents are not a perminent solution we wanted to go for surgery.
But alas the cardiologists in Andhra Pradesh are adamant , say they have a protocol which says that for single vessal disease the chest will not be opened and we had to compulsarily go for stent. We came to know that there is anoter type of latest( not really as the first one was performed in 1994 in India) called MIDCAB , where the surgery is done with small incession rather than cutting open the breast bone. We visited almost 10 hopitals in Vizag , Vijayawada and to my utter surprise even in Hyderabad . There is not a single CT surgon who can perform MIDCAB surgery.
Having heard of Medanta and Dr Trehan we went with a lot of anxiety and Dr trehan was very comforting . He said he preferrs MIDCAB over stent and to our great pleasure he gave us a discount after hearing that the patient is a dialy labourer ,and has 3 dependent children.
Then things went so smooth . The hospital took care of the escort of patients as well . The diet that is given to the patient is extraordinary and highly professional. My preyer to the Almaighty is that Dr Trehan be given long life and God willing Medanta a great success story.
I had a growse on the CT surgons of Andhra Pradesh if they cann do MIDCAB let them lose licence.

IN INDIA NOBODY BOTHER ABOUT THE POORS BECAUSE THERE THEY CANNOT MEKE MONEY. DEFINELY WE SHOULD FEEL PROUD WE ARE HAVING WORLD CLASS HOSPITALS.BUT MORE THAN 80% OF OUR WON COUNTRY PEOPLE CANNAOT ENTER THESE HOSPITALS.
THEN WHAT IS THE USE OF THESE HOSPITALS. THE RICH AND HEAVILY CORRUPT PEOPLE ONLY HAVE FIND ENTRY.

GOVERMENT SHOULD GIVE PERMISSION /LOAN AT LEAST WHERE 50 % OF THE BEDS ARE MADE FOR POORS.(NOT FREE TREATMENT BUT WITH MODERATE FEES).

Criminal neglect...
by AK on Jul 20, 2010 06:15 PM  | Hide replies

"This means that each bed has cost him Rs 2.5 crore (Rs 25 million) -- this is more than what it costs to build a room in a five-star hotel in the country!"
This is the whole problem in Indian health care system. Why shd there be any need for 5-star kind of facility in a hospital..?? Its not for recreation its for saving lives. This corporatism of health care has completely screwed up the health care scenario in India. In a country where health care isnt raching majority of its own population, why r we promoting so called "medical tourism"..???It is this greed for getting the richest of patients that make these hospitals invest so much and hence make it all beyond teh reach of common man. And with the kind of salaries these hospitals might offer to the limited number of medical professionals that the country is producing, the specialists may be beyond the reach of govt hospitals also..! Our govts ahve been talking of socialism for decades but how come they leaft the medical field go more corporate than even other business fields..?? Even in the capitalistic societies worl over, they always kept the health care more socialistic. But a poor country like india is targeting foreign patients with "5 star" rated hospitals!
This is one serious problem that is afflicting India and no one seem to be bothered..!! sic..!

No one to accept your point! Only people who are affected will think. But will not go against anyone!

They just want the ill treated. Be it Rs 2000 or 200000. These people will create the medicine and then the disease for it.

@AK,
this is what happens when people don't understand the concept of cost of bed. COst of bed does not mean value of bed, but the cost involved in maintaining the 1 patient, that includes taxes, cost of employees, utility bills and so on. Its upto the patient to decide what cost they want to afford. Its upto me to decide whether I should spend Rs 2.5 cr at Escort or Appollo or Rs 10,000 at some muncipality hospital. Its patients right... who are you to decide on my behalf?

The medical tourism you are so bashing off, do u even know what employment opportunities it has created so far?

The foreign patients who come for 5 star treatments are feeding your tourism, aviation, hoteling, insurance, administrative, pharmaceutical, clinical research, medical supplies industries... go calculate the people who get employed and how many mouths it feeds.

Wokhardt hospitals a pvt hospital promoting medical tourism is running mobile clinics and free vaccinations for Hep B ... do u know how much Hep B vaccination costs?? Thanks the foreign patients who come for 5 star treatment, its because of them the pvt hospitals are able to run the community programs.

If you are so concern of poor in India, let us know what u r contributing. Remember charity begins at home.

I am fed up with brainless shags ranting here about socialism... if u love socialism then go to china and experience what socialism is really about.
