Re: Symbol Value

I will recommend your employer instead of rupees salary to provide you your monthly groceries, Than you no need to worry about inflation.
you are expecting unexpected things from our ministers. It may be so that a sum of few crores of rupees may have shown spent for that simple unveiling of the poor symbol itself.you may ask where the crores gone then. It's anybody's guess.
What is the criteria for a symbol for any currency? If everybody gives symbol to their currencies it would be a hell of aproblem!I am sure pakistan will bring a symbol!!!
Rupee is NOT one of the oldest currencies in this world. Hindustan has a common currency only after British take over the rulings in 1856 from the Moghuls. Before 1856, there was NO common currency in the Hindustan bcoz there were more than 650 small kingdoms in our country and every one has 'gold' as a common exchange. Rediff should publich right info. USA, UK, France, Germany all have their own currency few centuries before 1856.
I don't understand why we are patting ourselves in the back. Of what use is a symbol if the currency itself does not have value and more than half the population is impoverished. We bring out a symbol and cry from rooftops that we have joined and elite club. So can everyone other country. Would any country buy Indian rupee to shore up their foreign exchange reserves? That day is far away, and the people and that includes politicians to work towards that day.

just having a Symbol for our currency does NOT add any value to the currency. Once you cross the border of our country, our currency does NOT have any value at all. You cannot use Rupee in other country and it doesNT matter if our currency has the symbol or not.

You need to get your facts right. The Rupee is accepted in quite a few places abroad. Musthafas in Singapore is just one of them.

I fully agree with these views. This is just a publicity gimmick by politicians to divert attention from the real issues. If India becomes a global power it will be on the strength of development and progress, not symbols. The hype around the rupee symbol is childish at best.

I disagree; lets deal with the 'currency value' first. If you carry say 10 Indian Rupees across the border, it does not become 'zero' - it may not be 'accepted' in retail stores etc. but any foreign exchange dealer would (should?) give the equivalent value of the 'local' currency...
now for the 'symbolic value' part.. you probably know there are more countries than te US who have the dollar as their currency, ie., there is Australian Dollar, Singapore Dollar etc. And there is also $. Its this $ any 2 parties interested in doing a transaction trans-border typically use.... but no one is stopping them from using say Indian Rupee as the means... which is where the symbol means more. we can take a small baby step by encouraging 'glocal' (local global as-in neighbouring South Asian, Asia-Pacific countries ) use and then slowly but surely compete with $....
you see its not always monetary value that counts...

the award given to the person behind the design is too meagre for a contribution which will stay forever.couldnt the government think of some better way of felicitating the hero.
Our priority should be to remove poverty, reduce corruption, increase agricultural production, provide quality education then we should think of "symbols"
