TN has not yet eliminated poverty completely. In 1984 TN was identified as one of the badly performing states in poverty alleviation. May be due to population control it is better now.
Anyway these statistics are confusing-for example in the year 2000, a survey showed that in the period 1993-99, Rajasthan and MP performed much better than the much better educated WB in poverty removal. These two states were also improving their literacy levels compared with UP and Bihar. Both history and geography are not favouring MP, Rajasthan and Chattisgarh. But UP and Bihar have perennial rivers and they should not be in this condition.

None of our leaders show any promise of setting things right. Not the least MMS or SG
Actually SG is not a leader in the right sense. She's a very big influencer using the clout of her family's name and fame.

If we are to believe MMS, wealth is generated, and where is it all going to? Has there been any marked improvement in the quality of life of general public in the past 10 years? Oh yea, everyone owns a cell phone! Thats about it.

Another 10 years, population will increase a few more times, more congested roads, poor infrastructure, more poor people, more rice rotting in warehouses.....maybe aam admi we can read this kind of an article on the 3g cell phones.

Can MMS come out with his or his party's vision for the next 10 years? And put plans to achieve it?

Sonia will have a vision that will be delivered in the next 4 yrs - that of Rahul becoming PM. She cannot see anything beyond it.

west especially love to hide its underbelly, and likes to highlight others .. poverty .. hide its social ugliness and corruption .. and our press readily helps the west by becoming its mouth piece ..

Poverty in India

If we have a few more insensitive Intellectuals like Manmohan Singh, Chidambaram and Montek Singh, it will not be far off when our food security problem will leave Africa far far behind.

Poverty in India
by Viswanath menon on Jul 18, 2010 08:27 PM  | Hide replies

Indira Gandhi started the slogon " garibi hatao" 40 years before. still we continue the slogon and try to feed poor people. State and Central Government are aware of the problem, what is the lacune and where we are stuck. still no action is being initiated from either side.
Our public distribution system, procureemnt agencies and food corporationof India headed by Agriculture Ministry is the main culprit. Their inefficiency ignored by Chief Ministers and Prime Minister has taken the country to this level. Corruption affects good governance.
All the good programmes meant for the poor are eaten by middle men and accumulated by few people in charge of the system. Control and accountability should start from bottom and should be supervised and monitored by top level people with full authority to punish the culprits.
Unless our systems are changed nothing will happen and as we see after 40 years, number of poor people will increase and we will continue the slogon in each election.

dr mms has predicted that india will be achieving 9.5% annual growth in the period 2010 to 2014.what he means is that the ambanis, tatas, mittals, adanis, jindals, birlas etc will grow @ this rate. the fate of the "aam aadmi" is not mms concern.

Medias are creating bad image about India...
by Tamil Arasan on Jul 18, 2010 06:05 PM  | Hide replies

this is very negative information, i believe the whole African population will be less then the population of UP,MP and Bihar...then how on earth they can say we have more people living in poverty then Africa...why don't they give and data on above poverty line in India and Africa...we are a billion plus population so off-course we will have more people living in poverty then Africa...also we have to see the massive growth of middle class in India after our market reforms...our private sector is doing good, if we develop proper infrastructure then in few years we will lift millions out of poverty...
But most of the blame should go to Congress for the massive number of people still under poverty, because out of 63 years of our independence they have ruled us for 50 years...50 years of corrupt governance from congress have hindered our growth a lot...
