This sort of things do happen in most of the public sector Banks too, because, I have seen and experienced this nonsense having worked in a Nationalised Bank for almost 3 decades. It is just "Penny Wise Pound Foolish".In one of the branches an attender stole Rs.25 from the Despatch section..there followed a Memo, a charge sheet..followed by enquiry by the Bank's IR officers..it went on for about 2 years as the Unions took their own time.. got several adjournments..meanwhile Bank must have spent atleast Rs.25000 (in early 1970s) on the enquiry officers TA,DA and other Allowances. Finally the Union could pevail upon the management to revoke the employee's suspension and got him reinstated .One more glaring example is..restrictions on incurring Capital Expenditure..we were allowed to spend thousands on repairs of vehicles but not allowed to go in for a New one...though amount spent on repairs would exceed the cost of buying a new vehicle..this went on for 2-3 years..I am only trying to highlight how the TOP Management acts, which are indeed detrimental to the Institutions..but yet the TOP mgmt gets away with all such faulty policy decisions.
Take this friend of mine – a neutron - for example. He went to a Bar to order a drink, and when it was the time to pay the bill, the bartender refused to accept any money saying: “Sir, for you…no charge.” (got the joke?)
Not knowing why the bartender refused to take any money from him, this neutron friend of mine came out of the pub. Just outside, he came across a very drunk proton-Pulsar-other friend of mine.
Like all of us who drink, these two started talking.
An upset neutron told the proton: “They refused to take any money from me.”
Proton enquired “Why?”
Neutron: “Don’t know man. I am sure there is something fishy happening here.”
Proton: “I also have this feeling. As soon as I came to this pub, I lost an electron(Chandra-another friend).”
employees are overburdened with work and hence no possibility to find time for surfing or Orkuting or facebooking..
If any company feels that its employees are wasting time then it is the fault of the company that it is not able to give as much work to employees which could keep them fully occupied.. Infact, in some of the companies, due to political reasons, different amount of work is given to different people even though they might be on the same designation..

excess work is counter productive, as over a period of time the productivity drops or the attrition rate increases.

you came here, read everything, commented everything and left. and you want to say that you are busy at work.
The author seems to suggest that employees need to work like robots because they have the fortune of having a job (which others do not). Don't calculate lost productivity like people are cogs in a machine. Productivity is a holistic concept and a lot of productivity depends on various factors -- (1) encouragement at work (2) meritocracy upheld by senior management (3) lack of corrupt and unethical practices and condolence of such activities by upper management (4) proper transportation and housing available in the area (5) lack of unpaid work and other such exploitation (6) workers getting suitable work per their skills (7) people are trained to do the work they are doing (8) work is not monotonous like as assembly line etc etc etc. If employees are unmotivated and waste time at work, upper management need to look at the mirror why they are failing miserably to deliver results commiserate to the salary/perks which they receive.

In addition: India does need such studies. But also have similar studies on (1) criminal-politician-business-bureaucracy nexus (2) rampant tax evasion and generation of black money (3) exploitation and unpaid work (4)hording, black marketeering, cheating (weights and measures), lack of receipts, false receipts, false bills (5) cheating in education (predatory fees, absurd marking system - everyone gets > 90%, unqualified and unmotivated teachers) etc etc etc. Don't keep harping on worker productivity and labor reforms.

well written, Coolfi. Workers are not robots and they should not be expected to work like robots.
It is true spending time on these sites are taking man hours but to log 10 hours continuously without a break should install an instrument not hire a person. Cons of Capitalism.
