Good to have universities as long as the education is affordable
by The Democracy on Apr 22, 2010 09:47 PM

Good to have new and innovative universities; but we shouldn't forget students are the purpose of the existence of universities.

In last couple of years, almost all Indian universities (except central and some state universities) revised their fee structures and those fee structures are beyond the reach of most students in this country.

A BTech degree from a little known college costs atleast about 10 to 15 lakh (including fee, books, computer, hostel etc.). And most of these students find it difficult to get a decent job after completing the course. If a fresh student gets a job for Rs. 5k per month, after spending Rs. 15 Lakh, how much time does it take for RoI?

Is India changing its vision to "Education for only rich"?

Most institutes, mainly the business schools, are doing pure business in the name of education. Govt should regulate the fees to some extent. Why these universities not offering consultancy services to earn money rather than charging so much to the students?

If govt doesn't take action on price control (i.e. university fees) or find innovative solutions to fund these universities, then a big gap is going to be developed between poor and riches.

Hopefully ..... what the heck ..... there most definitely will be.

Reservation is a great equalizer.

How dare anybody imagine they are better than anybody else simply on the basis of merit?

Osmania

Pls include Osmania University, i would strongly recommend this after looking at the recent behavior by students of this university that was very innovative. Because as a nation we must also learn "how not to innovate".

Sibal boasts a Lot. Need Results
by JustToHammer on Jan 04, 2010 05:39 PM

Commendable step to know. Looks suspicious about whatever Kapil Sibal talks. Previously, the flip-flop of RTE, Raising of qualifying marks in IIMs and now US top innovative universities collaboration.

We are already in half way of 11th Five year Plan. Hope, you Sibal concentrates more to materialize before the end of five year plan.

Rahul Gandhi is out of ministry. Kapil Sibal and Veerappa Moily ministries both look suitable to be given to Rahul if these guys dont justify their ministries.

Why Innovation University
by Justice Jeremiah on Jan 04, 2010 05:12 PM  | Hide replies

I do not fully comprehend the coinage "Innovation University".

Every institute/organization, small or big, - by design, choice or accident - has been engaged in nurturing and developing innovation amongst their members. Further, we have 'innovation centers' functioning in many leading institutions in the country (premier institute in the country,IISc for example). Also, the term innovation itself has undergone a transformation in the sense of including 'novity in practices' in all human actions, besides those covered by products and processes originally. In this context the Innovation University would seem to restrict and limit the boundaries of the task to a physical contour artificially constructed, governed and engaged by a special strata of people imagined or otherwise to be innovative - a basic flaw and a false belief. Innovation has undergone a "paradigm shift" (not excluding the 'conflicts' in perceptions in this modern era) from the serendipitous to the formally inculcated; its practices pervading a larger section of the society; and users encompassing the entire citizenry.

1. Innovation centers - national, regional, local - may be appropriate initially.
2. Interest evinced by Yale, Harvard, Princeton and Massachusettes welcome but need not be confined to these only.
3. Need to take stock of the performance of the Innovation centers already in place viz-a-viz funds/grants released.

Just a few thoughts for now.

They are Innovation Universities as their main aim would be research and innovative development... not like current universities whose current aim is to make the student mug up everything and vomit on the paper so that one can get a job to survive in the world...

Your reply seems to amply substantiate the implied image of the term 'universities' commonly held by the public -unstated in my preliminary thoughts - in our country ( You said: 'not like current universities whose current aim is to make .. .. .. to survive in the world...'). It is possible that 'Innovation Universities' will be viewed with similar negative connotations. Universities are generally citadels of Education (though it is also said that Universities are what colleges become when unmanageable) promoting a range of specialized fields of inquiry in gen science, social studies, Engineering, Medicine, Management, Law and so on. Innovation likewise refers to a term stimulating and propagating inquiry relating to ingenuity, novelty and utility, quite akin to a field of discipline (like General Science, Engineering etc. etc). We do not say 'Physics University'; 'Information technology university'; or 'Chemistry University' .. .. Hence the submission regarding Innovation University. It is a terminological inexactitude in context.

To add the prespective ..I once worked in GE's innovation center. Well what was it. is you take a existing product from US or Japan. Then remove all the expensive stuff and provide cheap and not so good replacement and sell it to indians at the price of US or Japan plus taxes. Since indians and indian government is least bothered about quality insurance claims and all... ge makes lot of money.. and I claim to be an innovator hehehe

Congrats for the memorandum of understanding.

A good move from those who have governed us particularly in HRD.It clearly shows that our instituitions educational and governining were not able to achieve profeciency in both the fields. We should thank our stars that these collaborated instituitions are not under the UGC and AICTE.Else they would have joined the bandwagon of instituitions coming under AICTE &UGC Which our minister feels are uncapable. We thank the HRD Ministry for accepting failure in revamping our controlling bodies.BUT LET US THINK.DONT YOU THINK OUR INSTITUITIONS CAN DO BETTER THAN THE MOU ONES IF WE ARE OUT OF THE CLUTCHES OF OUR MONITORING BODIES.WE SURELY WILL.ONLY OUR OWN RULERS DONT HAVE FAITH IN OUR COMPETENCIES.WHY?

But only give PhD degrees there
by Rakesh Tripathi on Jan 04, 2010 03:41 PM  | Hide replies

And only give PhD degrees there, no graduation and post graduation. This will make the talent to work for research, innovation and teaching! Other wise they again go to some outsourcing company for stupid work.
