To me this is great news..the people buying SUV are part of this new India ( top 25% ). They are living in a developed India which is not where 75% people are living in
So Let the remaining 75% benefit from them.. How?? Very easy -
Increase TAX on SUV purchases and Pertol for SUV.. The money collected can be used for subsidy in the real India where 75% of people are strugglong to live by getting crushed with inflation and infrastructure struggles
Every crisis is an opportunity., if we are willing to dig it out

What about if poor people are crushed by this vehicle via abuse (by the rich)?

from my point of view, your intention is really good, but did you really have a assurance , that the money collected as a subsidy will go to poorer, the greedy politicial will swipe it.
with using SUVs. I know it is not a pleasure to drive these large vehicles on Indian roads because of the traffic we have, but if someone wants it let it be -- we are not a dictatorship country. However, subsidized diesel should not be provided to these private vehicles. Let them pay regular market price (plus a premium) for the fuel they purchase for these gas guzzlers.

It is not just about the subsidised diesel, it is also about the environment. One need to be aware of the implications of using SUVs, especially large engine, 4X4s. What kind of polluted world will we leave to our coming generations if we not careful about our choices carefully?

Today's 4x4 are not diesel spewing boxes but very intelligent systems complying with BSIV or Euro norms. And do understand, 4x4 mode is normally not used within city, but only for offroading. I think banning SUV should also mean first ban all the Indicas BSIII which are polluting the environment more than the SUV. Mr. Ramesh has some grudge against a particular SUV since he did not get it at a discounted rate.
Let Sonia Maino Rahul khan and puppet stop using Govt vehicles free of charges before lecturing others These parasites are thriving on tax payers money while general public is only judiciously spending its hard earned money
if jairam is true to his conviction let him tell all congress man who are flocking to congress adhiveshion in Burari to discard their SUV S AND use cycke rikshas for communiting inside campus spread over 10 sq kilometer why he is stalling all industrial projects in all opposition ruled states Make him minister for industrial promotion b

"Ramesh" is name of his father, which indicates he doesn't have a real title, which inturn means he doesn't know about his fore-fathers!
an average Indian who buys a SUV is comparitively less richer then an average american buyer. then why does he buy it?
most of the vehicle costing below 5 lakhs are less sturdy. whenever one travel by the economy version of the Indian cars in the Indian roads and particularly the highways, he has to be praying continuously for the safe journey. that depends not upon the vehicle only, but on the road conditions, the lack of discipline of the pedestrians, the other drivers of the light, medium and heavy vehicles etc.
the one who can afford will definitely prefer the more sturdier SUV.
Re: Despite Jairam's rap, SUVs become big hits in India
by niranjan raju on Dec 18, 2010 09:23 AM
You cannot change the roads, nor the fellow drivers' behavior. What you can do is keep yourself safe. And SUVs are the best bet. They are far more safer than the regular hatchbacks due to their body structure design, kerb weight and thicker tyres. People who prefer the top End SUVs are more for offroading. Within city and for a safe highway driving and some amount of offroading you can still go for Mahendra and Tata SUVs. They are really good for Indian conditions.

No, It is true. Its no propaganda. Just imagine that every car company in India is showing double digit growths, even GM. But this his BMW at Rs.24L. Its a good purchase.
