The city that was only a torist destination with very sparing infrastructure and roads got a lift when it was pushed on by US entrepreneurs like gates and jobs who saw its relative less crowdedness as an opportunity for new industry.

Don't just throw your best talent in low cost service jobs. Build up strong research and business culture. Make your own identity, make your own rivals for like Google, Apple, Honda and Ford. Don't just take pride in being cheap labor of first world for after sales support. No super power is made that way.

India did not capitalize on the IT boom, some early entrants made money. Now it is sunset industry in india as salaries and hikes have come down heavily. Entry level salaries are the same as 3 - 4 years ago and inflation has shot up. Further, in industries like BPO there is no future for anyone as it is very low end job. Now countries like brazil, china, philippines are fast catching and this will further reduce salaries in india and the talented people will move away from this industry.
There was a time people moved into IT from other industries and now the reverse is happening. People are moving to teaching and government jobs leaving the IT industry.
This is a clear indication of sunset.

India needs to move away from low end services!
by Grizzly on Dec 14, 2010 02:14 PM  | Hide replies

If we want to be global leaders, it cant be done solely on being a leader in low-end industry. BPO's are only a part of the big picture but we need to develop high-tech industries to become a leader in business.

Now that we've got the world attention, we need to market more insdutries to the world. We have world class Pharma, health care, space, IT hardware, nano-electronics, Bio-technology, automotive and many other industries that we can market and bring in more foreign revenue.

Why just stick with BPO's?

There are a lot of countries who would buy other goods from us if we went on to market those. For example, we can sell our cars, buses, trucks in Africa and middle-east. There is a big market for them there. We could sell our pharma in east Asia, South America and south Asia. There are plenty more industries that we can market to the world.

Expand and diversify. Dont put all your eggs in one basket!

Try to understand the available workforce here. What you have mentioned is right, but the risk is 200% more in those companies as compared to small BPO/CCs where opening and closing is just like a pawn shop here in india and that has made it attract the so called entreprenuers play with most of the degree pass/fail studens and 12th pass...low payment-high income (for the employers)

first stop your dirty politics in offices. Projects are running away from kolkata and managers are being transferred to bangalore by force in an attempt to stop politics in kolkata. Learn to think straight and work straight first.
