Some points to ponder....
by NashikMarathi on Aug 11, 2010 10:53 PM  | Hide replies

Setting up industry in British India involved political patronage from the Brits. Fair enough since they were ruling the country. How did the first entrepreneurs set up shop... the few like the Tatas and much before them the Kirloskars? Who knows... it was a long time ago. Maybe it was ancient gold from the Maharajas or whatever... Who knows.

Something changed after Independence - a whole new dimension of political patronage emerged which picked winners and losers POLITICALLY.

Explain how until the scion of Indira formed Maruti motors only two car companies existed in India. Birlas had Ambassador and Walchand Hirachand had Premier. Both utter crap on par with what is available in Castros commie Cuba. But year after year and decade after decade they continued. The only explanation is political patronage seen only in commie countries.

Unfortunately in India it is not enterprise alone that succeeds - hardly any world class products are testimony to that. It is the WILLINGNESS to grease palms. That allows business to flourish and excellence to die.

Some communities do that better than the others.

obviously Tatas do grease the Palm but they manage media effectively with charitable donations...so and so.. when Tata was making truck, was it diffcult for them to make a Car.. remember they did run Air service before Indian airlines formation... It is all like you do not allow any forien truck makers and I wont enter in car business.. simple deals..huge money big market share..all in the family.. common indian mornic citizens will be dreaming ..someday he will go in mercedes..

A little knowledge of history gives a clue.
During the racist, bigoted Angrezi Raj, anyone who was non-native (i.e. non-Indian- i.e Parsis, Jews, Syrians, Armenians etc, and especially non-Hindus), were accorded priviliged status- the Tatas were among that privileged groups.

I think you are miskaten, there was a shortage of women in Parsi and most of my parsi Friends are Bachelors or married to Iranian's who converted as Parsi. double check. And Ratan has created history by doing so much good for himself, organisation and the Country. Hats off for his bachelorhood otherwise he would been a ordinary indian.

With the voicing of this "concern", it is apparent Mody is worried about some outsider ruining a Parsi enterprise like this company.

And people accuse Raj Takray of being territorial.

IF ALL WISDOM OF PARSIES TO BE FOLLOWED
by markand desai on Aug 11, 2010 07:46 PM

IT MUST BE PARSI PERSON AS SUCCESSOR OF RATAN TATA.
OVER A PERIOD OF TIME ITS PROVED THAT TATA ORGANISATION SUCCEEDED BY PARSI LINAGE HAVE KEPT
VALUES AND HUMAN MORAL IN BUISNESS.
THEY HAVE MAINTAINED HUMAN FACE IN BUISNESS AND HAVE NEVER BEEN GREEDY/VALUELESS OR EGO PROMPTERS.
The above qualities only can sustain in long run and ALL SUCH QUALITIES COME FROM A CLAN/LINAGESOVER AGES.

SO TO KEEP TATA CULTURE ALIVE THE SUCCESSOR HAS TO BE PARSI.

Tata Steel was a Parsi - Bengali Venture
by Somik Roy on Aug 11, 2010 07:24 PM  | Hide replies

Not many knows that it was Pramatha Nath Bose (P N Bose)hailing from 24 Paraganas, Bengal who advised and encouraged Jamshedji Tata to set up a Steel Factory in today's Jamshedpur. Without his painstaking research and the historical letter recommending J N Tata to put up industrial base in ‘Sakchi’, Tata Steel would not have seen the light of the day.Bose has several firsts to his credit. He was the first Indian graduate in science from a British University; first to discover petroleum in Assam; first to set up a soap factory in India and also the first to introduce micro sections as an aid to petrological work. He was also the first Indian to hold a graded position in the Geological Survey of India where he served with distinction. As a man of science, he had constantly taken up the cause of technical education in the country. His efforts also catalysed the foundation of the Bengal Technical Institute which is better known as the Jadavpur University today of which Bose was the first honourary principal.Even today if you visit Tata Centre two life like photos of Jamshedji Tata and that of P. N. Bose will greet you at the entrance. I am sure a deserving bengali must be given the professional mantle of CEO Tata Group and Sons. It would be a fitting tribute. PN Bose's grandson Amit Bose (Film director who introduced Sanjay Khan) is married to my aunt Monica Bose (Author Hills of Fire). They are settled in Croydon, England.

Why must you embarass all Bengalis Mr. Roy?

I read your post with interest all the way until you suggested that the CEO should be a Bengali as a fitting tribute to your long dead relative.

Your suggestion is too ridiculous to be treated logically but since it is so delicously filled with loopholes, I must.

First I don't see the role any current Bengali played in Mr. PN Bose's achievements, so why should they benefit?

Second, why focus on Mr. Bose's Bengaliness? Your uncle was also a man. For the same reason that you believe selecting a Bengali would somehow be a tribute to Mr. Bose, why wouldn't selecting any man or Indian be a tribute? Presumably he was as proud of being a man or an Indian as he was of being a Bengali?

Third, you do realise, don't you that the CEOship of a public company is not dynastic - there is a fiduciary duty that the board has to shareholders to make a meritocratic selection?

Finally, from what I read about him in Wikipedia, he was a visionary man of the kind that we seem to struggle to produce nowadays. What makes you think this kind of parochial thinking would in anyway be a tribute to him? Would he not be affronted to see narrow linguistic identity placed before merit in his name?

I am sorry if it hurt your feelings. Since the Tata Group has become a Indian Multinational it has long ceased to be a Parsi group. Since Russy Mody and other Parsis want to retain the Parsi toehold which Mr Ratan Rata thinks it otherwise, I just made a small suggestion. Now tell me how many Bengalis have been given a big position, although their contribution in the Indian Renaissance, Freedom Movement, Culture, Science have been immense, yet no Benaglis have ever been made the President of India, Prime Minister of India (although Jyoti Basu nearly made it had it not for strong oppostion from Karat, Surjit Singh and Yechury - infamously described by Sri Jyoti Basu as a historical blunder). Even Pranab Mukherjee has not been given this position. Today most elite bengalis have migrated abroad and are doing extremely well (including Noble Laureate Amartya Sen and Rajat Gupta of Mckinsey). Jai Hind

WELL SAID .....HOWEVER PAROCIALISM IS PROFOUND WITH MOST INDIANS, LEADING THE WAY IS TAMILS & TELEGUS FOLLOWED BY MARWARIS & GUJJUS, THESE PEOPLE NEVER ALLOW ANYONE TO ENTER THEIR DOMAIN BY HOOK OR BY CROOK! COMPARATIVELY BENGALIS ARE MUCH LIBERAL AND TOLERANT, ALSO SHOWS OFF MUCH LESS THAN WHAT THEY ACTUALLY HAVE ..... THEY ARE BORN MODEST IN NATURE ... WHICH AT TIMES IS MISTAKEN AS THEIR WEAKNESS BY SOME.
