Purchasing car
by Aloke Rudra on Aug 26, 2010 09:03 PM

Dear viewers,
Near future I want to purchase a hatchback car and zeroed on Beat(PS) and Ritz(LXI)& Swift(LXI).Compairing all aspects I felt Beat will be value for money although fuel economy & maintenance in long run is unknown whether other two cars costly by Rs50,000 but fuel economy, comfort and maintenance are excellent and proven. Please suggest which car should I purchase on the same price level excluding these cars also?
Regars,Aloke

can anyone tell why automatic transmission model cars are not so popular in India even though they are user friendly for indian roads?

Few reasons that I can think of...
1)The mileage is much less compared to manual transmission of same model
2)The chance of transmission failure and maintenance is higher.
3)Cost is higher when compared to manual transmission of same model

@Naimulla - to add to what has been said namely the cost and higher fuel consumption, there is also a perception in India that automatics are for women and that there is far greater driving thrills in the manuals. I live in Malaysia and drive and auto and I feel anyday an auto would be great in India specially for diesel cars where the mileage is already very very good. I hope to see automatics in Ford Figo/Fiesta as well as Maruti Swift. Hope these will be there when I come back to India!

There is a need to think logically here. 1)How many really need anything more than an Alto ? (now that it has 1 liter engine cant complain on power also)
2)Why would one need to spend more than 5 lakh on his daily mode of commute if he can get 90% of all what he want at less than 5 lakh 3)But what you need and not what you can afford ? Why is splendour best selling bike? Why is alto best selling car ? I am sure atleast 60% of those who own these can afford to spend 20% more but they chose value for money 4) A fiat uno or matiz also was never "out of reach" but it didnt sell ? So any product that has value for money will sell .

The best all terrain vehicle that you can find is a bullock cart. Gives excellent value for your money.

I have purchased one 2 months ago. It's my first car - a damn good car by any standards. Best interiors, space, boot space in this segment! Inside blue LED display is cool .... even AC in Auto mode is very good (I dont know why a few complain about it) at Kolkata sultry weather.
All 4 power windows, column adjustable steering, decent audio system with USB port, smooth gear shifts.
Cons: High price, mileage in crowded city driving with full AC about 10.5 km/l. Should go up after 2nd service.
I think I took a right decision in purchasing an i 20 magna (petrol).

Never tried it .... so cant say, but if you say 'ideal' factory conditions without AC then the company claims i think 16.5 kms/l.

Ikon Mileage & Maintenance
by Abhijit on Aug 02, 2010 07:32 PM

I am having Ikon 1.3 from last 6 years.
It's pick up is like any sports car & also steering gives a smooth control.
It gives a mileage of 10 kmpl in city limits but goes unbelievable 15 kmpl on highways & country roads.

But I do not prefer to talk about its maintenance. I have spent at least 2 lac on it. I have replaced silencer, battery, steering column, shock abs, door locks & many more things.
Ford vehicles are definitely not good & it is a pain to maintain & resell those.
They do not give 'Value for Money' pleasure.

i owned a ford ikon from 2005 to 2010. It was pathetic in temrs of mileage..9 per litre is exageration. it gave 7.5 to 8 . I had tough time selling it off. had to plead and pray before potentila buyers. could sell it only for 1.25 lakhs.....on the roads...i see as much ikons in six months as i see swits in a day..ikon in this list shows that the article is just there to fill space....dont write article just for writing rediff...research and then say..even ford people will thrash you for this...telling such a big lie...my advise to people who wanna go for figo..dont go for it...no mater what mileage it gives, parts and resale will be such pain in ass...that you will regret all ur life...

How many of you sure that you are getting correct 87 octane petrol..most of petrol bunks mix naphtha to petrol that reduces mileage to more than 30 %

There is ford ikon but no Hyundai accent in the list which has been much more successful. This just shows that its just another piece of imagination from rediff. No facts. Nothing credible.

Well said- after test driving Corollas & optras with their notchy gearboxes- I chose to retain the Accent and it's now clocked 1.25 lac km - smooth as ever...a new car can be recommended even today.
