employees beware
by fightagaintevils on Oct 04, 2009 01:16 PM  | Hide replies

many companies who fired employees in huge number have started recruiting. Its ur duty not to get lured for few thousand rupees increment.Make sure the following
1)They are making profits in the past two years
2)They didnt fire employees
3)Atleast 3 months full notice period pay.If its basic only u wil be in a fix
4)They have a large no of clients in different sectors and they have grown in the last few years.
Otherwise u r taking a huge risk and ur pay should get increased to compensate that risk.

Delayed education
by Tathagatha on Oct 03, 2009 09:49 PM  | Hide replies

The training which was to happen during 4 years of engineering study is being imparted by corporates (in part to suit their business needs which is correct). Our higher education has reduced to formula based system. The day you are in 'plus two' or equivalent the struggle begans to get into engg or med schools. Thanks to the so called 'BOOM' there are more number of engineering schools than elementary schools in India. Some of them (or rather most of them) came to exist out of shanties, living rooms and even cattle sheds. So naturally, there are 'DEEMED' universities and colleges - dime a dozen which , like any other business make lot of money. Most of these colleges are patronized by NETAs as side busienss. Miserable infrastructure and miserable teaching staff. The result is miserable end product.

Some time ago we were screening people for our company. All of them are between 6 months and 1 year after their engineering. more than half of the cases, the resume was fake. Because each was filled with things (that the candidate claims has worked on/has experience in) are still in their beta releases. Furthe, We were aghast to find that some of them do not even understand the binary system properly. I wonder how they got their computer engineering from colleges (each of which is AFFILIATED to some 'deemed university').Not blaming these poor candidates because they are no party to this scam.

No wonder then companies are spending lot of resources to train these people

I did not understand what you meant to imply but perhaps you intended to justify there are bright people out there but because of poor training they are unable to scale the heights they deserve. Yes you are correct and thats exactly what I said if you comprehend correctly. Insofar said, we can not always blame the poor infra structure. Excellence is not a function of your surroundings though we mistakenly assume so and try to tweek it - more often than not , in the wrong direction. Infrastructure is important no question about it. But personal responsibility - more so than infrastructure. This personal responsibility spills over the perceived barriers when you are really worth it. And we see such people daily - trainees through CEOs. Here , I did not mean in anyway to insult your sentiments built around the dollar wisdom. But there is a line drawn which we ignore time and again only to end up burning our fingers. I anticipate you have the bandwidth to understand what I said and hope too.

TO answer your personal question, I am an alumnus if IIT.

this is bound to happen because every HRD and Education minister talks about IITs, IIMs - which have a total of less than 10,000 seats !

NOBODY talks of primary schools; and other colleges which are mostly owned by cr00k_ed p0litici@ns.

Tathagatha,
I am surprised to see your comments on poor infrastructure...
What infrastructure you need to buy the books and read according to the syllabus of the university? Are you expecting spoon feeding in AC rooms as part of engineering education? Have you ever head of AMIE which is equalent to engineering and can be studied on your own and then you can write GATE to get into any IIT for MTech.
Dont expect all engineering graduates at the same level of IITians.... And the traing of the staff is a part of company strategy to get more work from the employees...Company need to train the people else they have to pay double salary in the open market....

Dont blame colleges and candidates for the training provided by the companies.... Every company need to show some documentation proof of training to impress the clients and the new recruits else.... new recruites will not come to you....

Finally, How much feee you paid in the college you blame for poor infrastructute? 1000 dollars for all engineering for four years? If you pay 10,000 dollars as in USA you will definitely get best education.

But Indian govt need to look at the poor people.... not limiting egineering education for rich people who can pay 10,000 dollars an year!!!!
You need to look at the background of the candidate you are blaming of poor skills... he might have had one meal a day many times in his past life.... Look from their side also...

Writing on behalf on the young techies
by atoh on Oct 03, 2009 08:48 PM  | Hide replies

I am one year old to this IT industry.I got training from one of this IT company.I was very confident after the completion of this training and also wanted to do something productive. But after posting of friends and myself to one of the units of the company I soon came to know how these companies work. They are least bothered about the talent they have. For instance a person performing least during the training is given the best of the projects nad person scoring highest of all during the training is made to sit on bench.
Talent soon realizes that he putting his skills and future in in danger and decides to leave the company as soon as he gets another offer.

This how most of techies and tech companies work...

Completion of engg. ---> joining the company and getting through the training -----> Posted to somme unit of the company ----> good talented pepole on bench ----> bad ones get work ----> Talented people leave the company ----> bad ones enjoy the company.....

But some day this bubble will burst and everyone will see the effect....so i want to do make this companies aware of what is going and please look into the matter.....

I dont agree with this statement : "This how most of techies and tech companies work". What you said is of course true for IT service based companies who are essentially bulk recruiters and its a known fact. So, when you join such a company you are expected to aware of this scenario. There's no point cribbing now. Still, if you feel you got a raw deal, then resign and join somewhere else (but this time do a little bit of research before you join)

Corporate Mantra - Tantra.
by Prasanna Thyamagondlu on Sep 28, 2009 05:24 AM  | Hide replies

Corporates spend money where there is more productivity. Is that a Mantra OR Tantra? Only people who have gained or lost by it can say better.
1) Provide Coffee / Tea to employees, evening snacks, dinner at night & ride to home after 10 pm. Is it a trick to get a 12 hour work day?
2) Get client sponsored training for a few. Distribute the free training to fellow employees for better productvity. One desi IT firm I know took away all training material after training. Is that good or bad?
3) Corporates announce huge dividends to tell employees that they are sharing profits. Is that fair for your 100s vesting in 5 years against their vested million shares?
4) Corporates announce layoff when business falls. This works for capitalist economy of US bcoz', the companies takes huge risks in business & technology while sharing profits with employees. What risk does a desi bodyshopping IT business have when it does not share any profits? A CEO of a desi IT company asked, if I share profits, are you willing to share loss as well?

5) Some desi IT companies gives shares after 5 years of service. The vesting is 10,20,30,40 percent in 5 years. No desi IT companies need an average joe after 5 years unless he is extremely good. Since there is no technical individual contributer career path in desi IT after max 5-10 years of service, why would they want to keep you? They better get rid of you before the last 40 percent vests. Is that fair?
Business ethics is hard to practice.

You must dig deep to understand why they're suppose to spend ?
by guruprasad venkatakrishnan on Sep 28, 2009 01:55 AM  | Hide replies

They have sent all trained persons to their home. Now they've hired few kids to do their jobs. Their salary would be around one by fifth to what they've paid to senior personnel who've been sent out from the company. Now you know why these folks are spending more money. Don't fool the public.

Agree. But one reason is because of new technologies. New business coming on new technologies.... hardly have any resource experienced in those technologies.

Biggest hogwash...
by Harikrishnan J on Sep 26, 2009 03:31 PM  | Hide replies

The so called world's largest training center (having been personally trained there 6 yrs back) is a mass-factory for creating IT sweatshop workers. Unlike them companies in US like Boeing, qualcomm pay for employees to get degrees from top notch universities. Would Infosys do that? The only objective of Indian IT firms is to make the "freshers" industry ready so that they can mint $15 an hour and get away paying $1/hr to employee. No one is complaining coz 300 million educated people are vying for jobs in India, afterall beggers can't be choosers. But stop painting this halo on heads of sweatshops like Infosys & TCS.
