Should portfolio pricing replace MRP
by SHYAMAL CHANDRA on Oct 27, 2009 07:25 AM

Abolition of MRP on goods will help shopkeeper to play with buyers. In remote areas like small towns, it could be devastating. MRP system should exist and that will give reference point on pricing. Shopkeeper can charge more or less than MRP,let the buyer decide to buy or not.

Should portfolio pricing replace MRP?

This whole article seems to based on a false argument that the Govt fixes MRP. That is not true in most consumer products (except probably medicines). The MRP is fixed by the manufacturer. But, the Govt insists that the price is to be displayed on the packaging. This is true even on commodities such as Rice, Grains etc referred in this post.

What about transperancy
by VINOD TYAGI on Sep 26, 2009 06:00 PM

One the one hand, it is argued that the retailers have command over non MRP goods like wheat, pulses, rise sugar etc. and manipulate the prices at their wish. Also said that the government has failed in controlling the prices of such goods. On the other hand abolition of MRP is being advocated. In that situation the retailer and the mediator shall have full control of prices and government as usual shall not have any control. What transparency the consumer shall have in that case.
