Minister has no vision but he can do nonsense things in 100 days
by Shiva Muthu on Sep 26, 2009 12:17 AM

At present, the minister views the agitation primarily for "money, money, money" not for autonomy or excellence, though at all available opportunity, the association does emphsize that it is primarily the flexibile cader system that IIT enjoyed that is now being interfered.

I recall a point that Prof. Indiresan said last night in NDTV:
"Why should IAS officers sitting in Delhi decide what percentage of Professors should be promoted
to higher scale?"

So, it looks, the deciding factor for insistance of "atleast 10% on AP(C)" and "atmost 40% for P " is basically based on money - does not seem to be on promotion of excellence.

If excellence were the deciding factor, then the matter could have been left to IIT council to decide.

IITs and USA
by Prakash Anand on Sep 25, 2009 10:44 PM

How many of the present students of IITs study there if they are asked to pay the cost government incurs on education at IITs? Will students do a cost benefit analysis and migrate to USA even for education and not only for jobs which they do at present.

In answer to the above paradox lies the truth of IITs.

KAPIL SIBAL : DO NOT PALY POLITICS IN IIM/IIT MATTER
by Shiva Muthu on Sep 25, 2009 05:11 PM  | Hide replies

Mr. Kapil Sibal's words during his first meeting with the Directors of the IITs when he took over the MHRD when some one raised the issue of IIT pay-scale was "let us not spoil the mood." Before the protests began, he did not give appointments and changed/cancelled meeting with the IIT faculty.Mr. Sibal has been very cleverly creating an impression that IIT faculty are greedy and only want money. He also mentioned that there has been no attrition in IITs. The fact is that IITs are severely understaffed, at least 40% faculty vacancies are not filled. There is more than 60-70% vacancies in the positions of technical staff. If IITs are not short of faculty, why do they need faculty from the old IITs to double up as faculty for the new ones and that too with great difficulty. The NDTV should do a comprehensive report about the working conditions in IITs. It is certainly better than other institutions. But if we want India to remain as a third world country then our better could only be worse from the MHRD's definition of excellence. Nehru who had a special liking for IITs should be turning in his grave. People working at IITs don't get lab space, proper equipments, office space and even proper classrooms because of so many constraints. Ask any current B. Tech student whether he or she would like to join the IITs for the salary given to fresh PhDs and whether they are happy with the classrooms, hostel, library and other facilities?

Shame

> It's shameful that they are considering themselves as good as US professors !!
> In US every hour a patent is filed new ideas new technology happens fast.
> Ind India, IIT/IIMs are simply called talented, but ground reality shows they score goood marks. But no brains to do even simple work.
> In INTEL/GE/TexasInstruments (India offices) no quality development of work is going on, INTEL planned 3 chips in a year using local talent, but just managed to do ONE chip, that too with hand-holding from US engineers.
> Even in Indian based companies, IIT/IIM have achieved nothing, but just takes big salaries.
> Example of SELF boasting is CHANDRAYAAN, NASA and 3 more universities developed Moon-Mapper-3 and was justa payload on Chandrayaan, it's the high tech moon mapper which said water molecules are present on Moon. Funny part is ISRO didn't have ANY access to data sent by payload, as they were all US property, all data was sent directly to USA/NASA.
NASA studied the data and have come to conclusion that water molecule is present.

Our stupid scientists are taking credit for NASA's success, such a shameful scientists we have. Till now they felt it achived nothing, but after NASA announced ISRO is jumping the gun to claim the credit. ONLY IIT brains can do this !!

IIT professors - Bunch of morons
by Srinivas on Sep 25, 2009 04:29 PM  | Hide replies

> First let IIT come out with a blue print of what it has achieved till date for our nation.

> India's RnD is in poor shambles, these professors are more interested in minting money by going abroad and illegally work as consultants there, they get salary here and good dollars outside as well.
> Some professors are so money minded that they demand money from PhD students in lieu of early OK to the research work.
> IIT/IIM staff don't teach basic things and inculcate real engineering spirit, top ranking IIM students are willing to become managers to sell Scotch Whiskey but they don't have enterpreunership capability, but just job hopping capability.
> Almost all Indian based firms have IITians in the RnD department, so far India is being passionate about copying, US/Eurape/japanese technology but no indian ideas.
> The way they are protesting shows their respect for India in bad times and their interest in money is ever increasing.
> They should be thrown into ocean ASAP

NO MINISTER, STOP MEDDLING WITH IITs
by damodaran mohan on Sep 25, 2009 02:48 PM

Let them present to me long term vision for producing Nobel Laureates, say Kapil Sibbal. Should they ? Are they not supposed to be autonomous institutions of highest learning ? The minister wants five year plans to produce Nobel laureates? Is this how Nobel Laureats are made ? Or is it decades of sustained quality research work, presentations of papers, exchange programmes, interaction, seminars etc. with the best international institutions of repute which go to produce a NL ? Yes, there is room for publishing more number of quality research papers from IITs but that needs total autonomy free from govt. interference and precisely for which they are fighting not just money. The ministers proposals of 40% cap…, induction level criterias & emoluments etc. are nothing but blatant govt. interference not conducive to qualitative induction for research level works. It is time Kapil sibbal realizes that he is not qualified to meddle in the affairs of such institutions. Regarding pay also at best govt. can issue overall norms or guidelines in the Indian context of comparative institutes of higher learning short of fixing their pay. No one is demanding pay parity with foreign institutes . Finally, Nobel prizes are not given in the field of Engineering but in other fields like Physics, chemistry, medicine, economics etc.

Greedy Profs
by Raju kumar on Sep 25, 2009 12:58 PM

What a ridiculous demand by profs. If they are not satisfy with salary, they better opted for other profession.
They are just comparing their salary with passing student.
If their demands are consider , then primary school teacher should get better than these profs, because they (primary school teacher) implant the foundation stone of ever1s knowledge Pillar.

IITs are not good as faculty is good !!

IITs are not good as Faculty is good !!

But they are good as the INPUT (students) they receive is BEST.

Do some thing for their betterment. Provide them better amenities in campus, rather then providing huge pay from Govt. and lump sum amount from consultancy, and enormous flexible money from govt. funded projects.
